In accepting his current position, Mr. May made a significant career shift from his role as the chief of staff, human resources with Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development, which he held in 2022. Notably, he also excels as a helicopter pilot with a medical flight company that supports the local community. He joined in 2023 after retiring from a distinguished career in the United States Marine Corps, where he flew helicopters from 2001 to 2021. During his military tenure, Mr. May's distinct titles included current operations planner, deputy director of future operations, aviation maintenance, safety and standardization, and air operations officer. He leveraged his military service in coordination and team building to excel in his present positions.
Mr. May remains active in diverse professional organizations and holds sustained membership in the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals and Phi Kappa Sigma. Notably, his contributions have been recognized through accolades such as the Defense Meritorious Service Medal in 2020, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal in 2017 and the Aviation Safety Award in 2013.
Impressive academic credentials further define Mr. May's presence in the field. He holds a bachelor's degree in international business from Mansfield University, which he completed in 2001, and he earned a master's degree in management and leadership from Webster University in 2015. Mr. May also pursued military science and operational studies at Marine Corps University, and he counts these academic achievements as pivotal in shaping his leadership and strategic thinking skills.
Mr. May's commitment to continuous learning has led him to complete vital certifications. He is proud to hold a commercial pilot rating for airplane single and multiengine land, rotorcraft helicopter, instrument airplane and helicopter from the Federal Aviation Administration. Additionally, he has been active as a certified flight instructor for rotorcraft helicopter and instrument helicopter since 2014, and Mr. May's comprehensive applied training at the Joint Forces Staff College's Joint and Combined Warfighting School further underscores his comprehensive expertise.
Mr. May is a devoted father to three children and achieves balance through outdoor activities such as visiting the beach, hiking, and snow skiing. In addition to his professional endeavors, he maintains involvement in civic organizations and contributes as a coach for Little League International and youth programs. Mr. May also participates as a community volunteer focusing on health and leadership development.
The positive influence of a supportive family, including his parents and siblings, has motivated Mr. May to persist in his pursuits and achieve success, and he credits them as inspiring role models. He is now committed to paying it forward by positively impacting others in the same way, and looking towards the future, he envisions establishing a flying school dedicated to empowering rural children and veterans by providing opportunities to earn flying licenses.
