She completed a Bachelor of Arts in history and economics from the University of Madras in 1981, after which she earned a Master of Business Administration in marketing from the University of Mumbai in 1983. She then relocated to the United States in 1988 to pursue a terminal degree in organizational management at Rutgers University, and Dr. Gopalakrishnan proudly completed her Doctor of Philosophy in 1994.

Numerous prestigious accolades have honored Dr. Gopalakrishnan's many meaningful contributions, including being named a Fulbright Specialist at Universidad Pablo de Olavide in 2011 and receiving multiple best paper awards from organizations such as IEEE Transactions in Engineering Management, Eastern Academy of Management, and the Academy of Management. As the editor-in-chief of the South Asian Journal of Business Studies since 2016, Dr. Gopalakrishnan persists in her directed efforts to influence academic discourse through her publications on topics like strategic alliances and entrepreneurial and innovation performance.

Dr. Gopalakrishnan balances her professional life with personal interests that include theater, sports, tennis and traveling.
