Before being acquired by Genentech, Mr. Umar held several key roles at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis from 2003 to 2011. He contributed to advancing drug delivery technologies as an associate consultant engineer in the drug delivery device research and development division. Concurrently, Mr. Umar served as a senior process engineer within the same division, helping develop and market new medical device products. His tenure at Eli Lilly was marked by his commitment to innovation and excellence in engineering.

Among other impactful roles, Mr. Umar was a quality manager at Boston Scientific between 1998 and 2003, focusing on microvasive urology, endo and non-vascular medical devices. His earlier career included roles as a quality engineer at Amatek in 2000 and as a quality-molding specialist at Teledyne Water Pik in Fort Collins, Colorado, from 1990 to 1998. Throughout his career, Mr. Umar has become proficient in product development, manufacturing, project management, and research and development.

Mr. Umar's academic background has been instrumental in shaping his professional success. He earned a Bachelor of Science in agricultural technology from the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria in 1984, a master's degree in education with a focus on engineering from Colorado State University in 1987, followed by coursework in mechanical drafting at Westwood College Denver North between 1997 and 1998. Ultimately, he received a Master of Science in quality engineering from Lehigh University in 2007. Besides his formal education, Mr. Umar received certification in executive leadership studies from Cornell University, further underscoring his commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Umar is actively involved in the development of Social Services & Special Programs in Africa. Mr. Umar founded and sponsors the Million Children Empowerment Initiative (MCEI) organization.
