A distinguished figure in the field of dermatology, Dr. Weiss has served as the director of Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin & Vein Institute since 1985. With a career spanning four decades, he has made significant contributions to dermatological practices, particularly in the development of endovenous ablation as a replacement for vein stripping. His groundbreaking advancement is documented in multiple textbooks and highlights his expertise in cosmetic dermatology. His day-to-day responsibilities include interviewing patients for potential enrollment in new trials and seeing current patients to examine their progress.
In addition to his work at Maryland Dermatology, Dr. Weiss has been an adjunct associate professor of dermatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine since 2013 and previously served as an associate professor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1986 to 2013. His dedication to advancing dermatological science is evident through his patent for the thermal quenching of tissue — successfully secured in 1999 — as well as his numerous publications, which include co-authoring "Lasers and Energy Devices for the Skin" in 2013 and contributions to more than 10 textbooks.
Dr. Weiss' professional achievements are complemented by his leadership roles within industry-related organizations. He has served as past president of both the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery Inc. and the American Vein and Lymphatic Society. Additionally, he was president and treasurer of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Inc., receiving multiple presidential awards for his contributions to laser technology.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Dr. Weiss earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Columbia University, where he graduated cum laude in 1974 and was inducted into The Phi Beta Kappa Society. He then obtained a Doctor of Medicine from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1978. His educational achievements laid a strong foundation for his storied career and are further enhanced by certifications from the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Deeply committed to civic engagement, Dr. Weiss has performed free skin cancer screenings at local hospitals under the auspices of the American Academy of Dermatology Association since 1995. In the coming years, he aims to develop long-term solutions for melasma and create advanced devices that incorporate artificial intelligence, emphasizing environmental sustainability by using water instead of harmful refrigerants for skin cooling systems. His future goals reflect his ongoing commitment to making dermatological treatments safer, more effective and environmentally friendly to society.
