IRVINE, CA, May 02, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gordon D. McLaren, MD, professor emeritus of the University of California Irvine Medical Center, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Southern California Edition of The Wall Street Journal, published on November 21, 2024.

Dr. McLaren celebrates a diverse career, having spent 51 years as a physician and 44 as an educator. At the University of California Irvine Medical Center, he taught in the division of hematology and oncology for 23 years before retiring in 2021. Following his retirement, he was named professor emeritus and remains involved in research and teaching.

Inspired by his father, who held a Doctor of Philosophy in the field, Dr. McLaren initially pursued an education in chemistry. While attending the University of Missouri, he realized a passion for medicine and decided to apply to medical school. After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, he entered Stanford University's medical program. Though his father ultimately did not pursue a career in medicine, many of Dr. McLaren's other family members did, and he felt a strong connection to the field. He graduated from Stanford University in 1970 with a Doctor of Medicine and went on to complete an internship in internal medicine at Bassett Medical Center, a hospital affiliated with Columbia University. Dr. McLaren then served for two years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, and he subsequently completed postgraduate medical education at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Once Dr. McLaren completed his medical education, he commenced his teaching career in 1977, joining the faculty of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, in the division of hematology and oncology. In 1986, he moved to the University of North Dakota, where he became chief of the division of hematology/oncology and also served as chief of the oncology/hematology section at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. In 1998, he secured a teaching position at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center and continued to work as a physician, serving in the Veteran's Administration Long Beach Healthcare System.

Dr. McLaren's distinguished career is marked by groundbreaking research and the successful acquisition of research grants. As a physician, he made valuable contributions to the American Society of Hematology, chairing the society's scientific committee on iron and heme for a year. Since retiring, he has continued his involvement as a distinguished alumni member of the American Society of Hematology.

Although retired, Dr. McLaren still maintains a lab at the Veteran's Administration. During his early training in hematology-oncology, he recognized the significance of collaboration in conducting scientific research. To that end, he acknowledges the influence his collaborators have had on his success. Working with these talented individuals led him to explore different aspects of his field, diversifying his knowledge base and research efforts. Dr. McLaren maintains strong connections with his collaborators, with whom he has published numerous articles in scientific journals; he plans to continue pursuing new opportunities with them in the future.

Looking ahead, Dr. McLaren hopes to continue conducting research actively. His areas of research interest are focused mainly on disorders of iron metabolism, including hemochromatosis and other forms of iron overload, control of intestinal iron absorption and regulation of cellular iron-binding proteins. Over the years, he has presented much of this research at conferences and events hosted by the International Society for the Study of Iron in Biology and Medicine, the major society in the field.
