He also specializes in endoscopic spine surgery. Additionally, he conducts major surgeries, including abdominal approaches and spinal fusions, using robotic surgery.
In addition to his role as director of spine surgery at Alexander Orthopaedics, Dr. Zahrai is the program director for the West Florida Spine Fellowship and the medical director of the Orthopaedic spine and robotic surgery program at HCA Florida Largo Hospital. Dr. Zahrai holds certifications from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
Throughout his career, Dr. Zahrai has been recognized for his pioneering work in robotic spine surgery, having performed one of the first such surgeries in West Florida. His commitment to innovation is evident through his early adoption of this technology despite initial skepticism from peers. The advantages of robotic spine surgery include enhanced accuracy, patient-specific customization, and faster recovery times, which Dr. Zahrai supports with strong research-based evidence.
Dr. Zahrai attributes his success to mentorship from influential figures during his training, emphasizing that their guidance significantly accelerated his path to achieving his goals. He values mentorship as an essential component of professional growth and continues to contribute to the education of future surgeons through various initiatives within the medical community.
Dr. Zahrai believes in treating every patient like a family member, a principle that is deeply important to him. He thinks it is vital for patients to feel that their doctor cares about them, especially since surgery carries risks. He emphasizes the human side of medicine, and ensures that his residents and students understand that being a good person is essential to the practice of medicine.
Born in Tehran, Dr. Zahrai is a devoted husband to his wife and a proud father of two. Although he no longer plays hockey, a sport he enjoyed during college and medical school, he remains an avid fan and holds season tickets to Tampa Bay Lightning games.
