NEWPORT BEACH, CA, May 12, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James E. Engel has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Mr. Engel, a retired principal material and processes engineer/scientist, has made significant contributions to the field of nondestructive testing throughout his career. His expertise in ultrasonic techniques, x-ray, electromagnetic testing, thermal imaging, laser shearography and new program development has been instrumental in advancing aerospace technology. His most notable achievements include developing methods to test materials for advanced products, such as propulsion systems, pressure vessels, thermal protection systems, composite materials and welding. His contributions to the American Society for Testing Materials for writing industry standards is also a testament to his influence and dedication.

Mr. Engel's career began with Lakehead Testing and Braun Engineering Laboratories in Minnesota from 1973 to 1983. He then joined General Dynamics Convair, Space and Energy Systems in San Diego, California, as a quality engineer from 1984 to 1997, specializing in nondestructive testing. Concurrently, he worked with Lockheed Martin in San Diego in the same capacity.

In 1997, Mr. Engel joined Boeing Defense, Space and Security in Huntington Beach, California, as a material and processes engineer/scientist in the nondestructive testing department. Over nearly two decades, until his retirement in 2016, he played a crucial role in developing specifications for space launch systems and leading the first development of phased-array ultrasonic techniques to inspect friction stir welds on rocket fuel tanks. Additionally, he contributed to Boeing, NASA, ASNT and ASTM forums and conferences by authoring papers and making presentations, further solidifying his reputation as an expert in his field.

Mr. Engel's academic background laid the foundation for his successful career. He earned a Master of Science from the Institute of Safety and Systems Management at the University of Southern California in 1989. Prior to that, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in engineering technology from St. Cloud State University in 1983 and an Associate of Applied Science in metals testing technology from Ridgewater College in 1973. His certification in entrepreneurial management from San Diego State University further enhanced his ability to innovate within his field.

Throughout his career, Mr. Engel has been recognized with numerous awards, including a fellowship from the American Society for Nondestructive Testing and the San Diego Section fellowship from the same organization. He also received the Meritorious Invention Disclosure Award, the Spirit of Cook Award from Boeing, and various certificate awards from Boeing, NASA and General Dynamics. He is the holder or co-holder of more than 10 patents.

Outside his professional life, Mr. Engel is involved with civic-minded organizations and contributes financially to Mayer Lutheran High School in Minnesota. He also participates on the Safety Team at Mariners Church in Southern California and has donated several thousand hours as a volunteer with Newport Beach Police and Orange County Sheriff Departments.

In his personal life, Mr. Engel enjoys performing stand-up comedy at senior centers and has plans to expand this hobby to local clubs. As a former marathon runner and coach for adults, he aims to return to coaching while also mentoring former colleagues. His determination, ability to overcome obstacles, willingness to go the extra mile and support from mentors have been key factors in his success.
