WASHINGTON, DC, May 20, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gilles Alfandari has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Alfandari has dedicated over three decades to economics, with a career marked by significant contributions to international finance and development. Currently serving as an advisor for multilateral organizations and the G7/G20 at the World Bank, he has played a pivotal role in economic diplomacy, getting multilateral development banks to work better as a system, and promoting global economic policy coordination since 2016. His work is driven by a passion for addressing global challenges and ensuring that his efforts have a lasting development outcome.

Before his current role, Mr. Alfandari was a senior economist in the economic management and operational policy departments of the World Bank from 1999 to 2015. During this time, he was instrumental in strategizing means of implementation for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, for which he helped design a comprehensive bank-wide approach to improve lending strategies and financial instruments. His work involved facilitating negotiations with the United Nations and other international partners. He also contributed to revamping the Highly-Indebted Poor Countries Initiative to restore sustainable debt in developing economies. He worked on Vietnam, Bolivia, and across Africa. During that time, Mr. Alfandari helped reinvent how the World Bank and the donor community could more effectively engage in countries affected by fragility, conflict, and violence, working and writing on the security/development nexus.

From 1997 to 1999, Mr. Alfandari worked as a macroeconomist at the Institute of International Finance, focusing on emerging markets in Central and Eastern Europe. Here, he collaborated with investment banks to enhance macro financial stability. His earlier experience as a consultant in policy research, as a team member of the 1996 World Development Report "From Plan to Market," and on capital markets development at the World Bank Group from 1994 to 1997 laid the foundation for his future endeavors.

Mr. Alfandari's academic background is extensive and diverse. He earned a master's degree in international affairs from Sciences Po Paris in 1997, a master's degree in economic policy from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in France in 1992, and a master's degree in mathematical economics from École Nationale Supérieure d'Économie et d'Administration (ENSAE) in France in 1991. Additionally, he holds certifications from prestigious institutions such as Harvard Kennedy School, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the University of Oxford, and has passed all three levels of the CFA Program.

Mr. Alfandari was recognized for his contribution to the World Bank with the President's Award for Excellence in 2001. In 2013, he authored "Financing for Development Post-2015", a World Bank Report, showcasing his thought leadership in development finance.

Mr. Alfandari is deeply committed to his family and personal interests. Born in Paris, he enjoys exploring culture, arts, theater, museums and concerts. He loves hiking and sailing across the globe. He plans to continue his impactful work at the World Bank while ensuring his efforts benefit future generations, including his children. With aspirations to spend more time in France, notably in Nice, on the French Riviera, Mr. Alfandari remains dedicated to promoting global initiatives that serve collective goals and ensure a healthier planet for all. He is particularly enthusiastic about the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, which aims at "accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean."
