Since 2023, Mrs. O'Brien has served as the program director for the Veteran Spouse Network (VSN), which operates under the Institute for Military and Veteran Family Wellness at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) and offers peer support and educational programs tailored to military and veteran spouses and their families. As program director, Mrs. O'Brien manages a team of six full-time staff members as well as student workers from various universities and graduate research assistants. Her responsibilities include developing strategic plans and visions for the program, fostering collaboration among her team, and engaging in partner and funder development efforts to strengthen relationships.
Prior to her current position, Mrs. O'Brien served as a program manager of the VSN from 2017 to 2023. During this time, she played a pivotal role in expanding the organization's reach from a local entity in Central Texas to a national presence. Her dedication to fulfilling daily responsibilities while transforming the organization is a testament to her commitment and leadership abilities. Mrs. O'Brien joined UT Austin in 2017 as a program coordinator for the VSN, gaining valuable experience that laid the foundation for her future success. Her earlier career included roles as an MSSW intern with the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas in 2017 and as a case manager with Goodwill Central Texas from 2015 to 2016.
Mrs. O'Brien received a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin in 2017 and a Bachelor of Science in law and society from American University in 2012. Additionally, she holds certifications in Adult Mental Health First Aid from Mental Health First Aid Inc. and as a Veteran Spouse Resiliency Group peer leader within the VSN. These educational achievements have been instrumental in shaping her approach to social work and advocacy.
A thought leader in the veteran spouse and family community, Mrs. O'Brien has presented at several conferences across the country, including the VA/DoD Suicide Prevention Conference, the Military Social Work and Behavioral Health Conference, and more. These events afford her the opportunity to educate other professionals about needs and best practices for her community.
Mrs. O'Brien's dedication extends beyond her professional life into civic involvement. She is actively engaged with organizations such as the White Oak Collaborative and the Texas Suicide Prevention Collaborative, which recognized her team's contributions with an Outstanding Partner award in 2023.
Born in Austin, Texas, Mrs. O'Brien enjoys spending time with her husband, son, daughter and four dogs, being outdoors, and listening to live music whenever possible. Looking ahead, she aims to streamline services within her organization, identify strategies for expanding its impact and achieve sustainability. Her goal is for the organization to become widely recognized as the top resource for military and veteran spouses.
Mrs. O'Brien attributes much of her success to her personal experiences as the spouse of a Marine Corps veteran and the unwavering support of her husband and family. This personal connection fuels her passion for advocating on behalf of military and veteran families, ensuring they receive the support they deserve.
