His role as the managing director of the Data Science Institute on campus since 2022 further underscores his commitment to advancing data science. Moreover, Mr. Karr has excelled as a professor in the department of statistics, operations and data science since 2022 at the university's Fox School of Business.

A professional journey characterized by a series of impactful roles, Mr. Karr's work in the field has included serving as a senior data scientist at Fraunhofer USA Center Mid-Atlantic since 2020. Based in North Carolina, Fraunhofer USA is part of Fraunhofer USA Inc., a nonprofit research and development corporation. Mr. Karr also founded AFK Analytics LLC in 2019, where he remains actively involved as a principal in Philadelphia.

Before these roles, Mr. Karr was the director of the Center of Excellence for Complex Data Analysis at RTI International from 2014 to 2019. His earlier tenure as the National Institute of Statistical Sciences director spanned between 2000 and 2014. Additionally, Mr. Karr was influential as a professor at Johns Hopkins University, where he taught from 1973 to 1993. During these two decades, he held various administrative positions, including assistant dean for minority affairs and associate dean for special projects at the school of engineering. His expertise in mathematical sciences was also recognized when he chaired the department between 1985 and 1986.

Mr. Karr's educational background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He studied at Northwestern University, earning a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in 1969, a Master of Science in industrial engineering in 1970, and a Doctor of Philosophy in applied mathematics in 1973.

Active in his professional community, Mr. Karr holds membership in esteemed organizations such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Statistical Association. Additionally, he is deeply involved in civic activities. He founded the Society for Privacy and Confidentiality Research in 2024 and supports cultural institutions like the English National Opera and Opera Philadelphia.

Mr. Karr's scholarly contributions include authoring influential works such as "Point Processes and their Statistical Inference," with editions published in 1986 and 1991, and "Probability" in 1993. His refereed papers on Markov chains and aircraft sortie allocation models further demonstrate his expertise. Among other noteworthy accomplishments, Mr. Karr holds a U.S. patent for a system and method for visualization, analysis and control of a dynamic database.
