Before accepting her appointment at Fielding, Dr. Stevens-Long initiated an affiliation with California State University, Los Angeles, where she taught at the rank of professor of psychology from 1971 to 1991. From 1991 to 1993, she held a professorship at the University of Washington, where she was presented with an award for outstanding teaching in 1992.

She holds both a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and she earned a PhD in child development and experimental psychopathology from the same institution. Dr. Stevens-Long is also the senior editor and a contributor to the prestigious "The Oxford International Handbook of Adult Development and Wisdom," a collaborative project that involved managing contributions from 30 authors.
Driven by a desire to serve, Dr. Stevens-Long remains focused on civic engagement. She supports approximately 20 charitable organizations, with particular attention to environmental causes, and she volunteers with Hospice of Santa Barbara, providing companionship to individuals nearing the end of their lives. Additionally, she leads the Santa Barbara chapter of Love on a Leash, bringing comfort to everyone from kindergarten classes to nursing home residents with her therapy dog, Banjo. Dr. Stevens-Long has also been an active member of the board of directors for LC Global Consulting Inc. since 2019.
