MOUNT VERNON, NY, June 20, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Steven Chananie has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Chananie has cultivated a distinguished career in law, marked by his expertise in health care regulation and his commitment to justice. As Special Counsel at Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton, he has balanced his legal responsibilities with his theological studies at Union Theological Seminary since 2020. His transition from Partner to Special Counsel allowed him to pursue his passion for interfaith theology, while maintaining his professional commitments. As part of his Seminary training, he completed an internship as an interfaith hospital chaplain on two oncology units at a major New York academic medical center. The experience was transformative; and at the urging of his chaplaincy supervisor, he wrote the recently published book, Remembrance of Things Forgotten, Lessons Learned During My Brief Time as a Hospital Chaplain.

Prior to his current role as Special Counsel and time in Seminary, Mr. Chananie was a corporate and health care Partner at Sheppard Mullin from 2015 to 2020. During this time, he made significant contributions to the firm's national health care team, utilizing his extensive knowledge in health care compliance and defense. Before joining Sheppard Mullin, he was a Partner and Chair of the health care compliance and defense group at Garfunkel Wild, P.C., where he led the group from 2000 to 2015. His leadership and expertise were instrumental in supporting the firm as a regional leader in health care law.

Mr. Chananie's legal career began in public service as an Assistant District Attorney at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office from 1983 to 1987. He then served as Counsel to Field Operations and as Chief Appellate Counsel for the New York State Organized Crime Task Force from 1987 to 1993. His work involved conducting the agency's appellate work, reviewing wiretap applications, and providing legal guidance on prosecuting complex organized crime cases. This experience laid the foundation for his subsequent role as Chief of Appeals at the Queens County District Attorney's Office from 1993 to 1996, where he transformed the Bureau into one of the top criminal appellate offices in New York State. While at the Queens County District Attorney's Office, he also acted as an advisor to the Office's Investigation's Division and helped to enhance its electronic surveillance capabilities of organized crime. In 1996, he left public service and joined Garfunkel Wild in its compliance and defense group.

In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Chananie has shared his knowledge as an adjunct professor at both Pace University School of Law and Brooklyn Law School. His dedication to mentoring young attorneys is evident in his teaching roles and his leadership within various professional organizations, including the American Health Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, the Health Care Compliance Association, and the New York State Bar Association.

Mr. Chananie's academic achievements include a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 2025, a Juris Doctorate from the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University in 1983 (where he graduated first in his class), and a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1979. His lifelong interest in spirituality and ethics has been a guiding force throughout his career, influencing both his legal practice and his theological pursuits.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Chananie is actively involved in civic organizations, including the Interfaith Center of New York and the Society for Earth Law. He has co-authored several publications on health care law and compliance, contributing valuable insights to the field. His accolades include recognition as one of the Best Lawyers in America for Healthcare Law and being named a Leading Lawyer by Chambers USA.

In his personal life, Mr. Chananie enjoys spending time with his family and granddaughters. A lifelong vegetarian since the age of twelve, he continues to explore ways to integrate his passions for law, theology, and spirituality into meaningful projects, such as writing his book and further developing the Society for Earth Law. His commitment to ethical practice and compassion for others remains central to both his professional endeavors and personal aspirations.
