Dr. Kao has established a distinguished career in the field of nuclear engineering, marked by significant contributions to both academia and industry. As a principal safety analysis engineer at ENERCON in Kennesaw, Georgia, where he has been serving since 2024, he provides technical support to commercial nuclear facilities and advanced small-modular reactor projects in areas such as safety analysis, radiological assessment, thermal-hydraulics calculations and power uprate licensing topics.

Before being acquired by ENERCON, Dr. Kao served as the chief engineer and consultant at Nuclear Safety Analysis Corp. between 2012 and 2024, providing invaluable technical support to commercial nuclear facilities and small modular reactor projects. Dr. Kao also excelled as a principal consultant at Numerical Advisory Solutions in Cary, North Carolina, from 2021 to 2024, following a tenure as an advisory engineer at AREVA in Charlotte, North Carolina, between 2008 and 2013.

Dr. Kao's earlier professional journey included serving as a nuclear safety analysis consultant for DeNuke Services from 2007 to 2008, where he assisted GE-Hitachi to obtain a license for an advanced Boiling Water Reactor design, and as a visiting engineer and research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 1985 and 2008. One of his most notable accomplishments was at MIT, where he developed the first PC-based high-fidelity Pressurized Water Reactor simulator, which the institution has used for educational purposes for over two decades.

In addition to his engineering roles, Dr. Kao has held positions such as enterprise information technology consultant from 2005 to 2007 and international advocate for Asia, as well as senior software architect at Computer Associates Inc. between 1997 and 2004. His career began with roles including senior project engineer at the Northeast Utilities in Waterford, Connecticut from 1985 to 1997, where he was instrumental in obtaining the startup license of the Seabrook nuclear power plant, and senior engineer at Engineering Planning & Management in Framingham, Massachusetts, dating back to 1984.

Dr. Kao's academic background is equally impressive, having earned a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1979, a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear engineering from MIT in 1981 and 1984, respectively and an Executive Master of Business Administration from Columbia University in 1997. These academic achievements have played a crucial role in shaping his successful career.

Active in his professional community, Dr. Kao is a life member of the American Nuclear Society. Recognized for his expertise in safety analysis of nuclear power plants and novel design applications of advanced nuclear reactors, he has authored and co-authored several influential publications, including 'Application of Supercritical CO2 Brayton Cycle for Small Modular Light Water Reactors,' presented at the International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants in 2016.
