NEW YORK, NY, July 22, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. James M. Shorter has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Shorter, a distinguished veterinarian, has dedicated 47 years to the field of veterinary medicine. He is the owner and managing partner of Kalvig & Shorter Veterinary Associates in New York, a practice he founded in 2013. Dr. Shorter is responsible for diagnosing and treating clients with thoroughness and detail related to their pet's health concerns, all done with exceptional customer service. His expertise in internal medicine, advanced diagnostics and surgical techniques has earned him recognition as an expert in his field of general practice, surgery and disaster medicine.

Prior to establishing his current practice, Dr. Shorter served as the owner and director of Bergen Veterinary Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey after serving as an associate for five years. He started in 1978 as an associate and then purchased the practice and acquired the AAHA certification. Dr. Shorter sold his practice in 2000, became an associate veterinarian and surgeon at New York Veterinary Hospital on the Upper East Side in New York City. On September 11, 2001, Dr. Shorter, along with team members from the practice, were first responders at Ground Zero, aiding in the care of the 300-plus search and rescue dogs on site. They helped set up the MASH unit mobile hospital located close to the collapsed towers. From that six-week experience, he helped found Veterinary Emergency Response Team (NYCVERT), an organization focused on disaster response of companion animals and working dogs. NYCVERT has a seat on NYC OEM (Office of Emergency Management). There had been no plan in place in the city prior to this.

During this period, he refined his skills, built up a very large, loyal clientele and established a reputation for excellence in veterinary medicine. His commitment to his profession is further demonstrated by his involvement with various organizations focused on disaster relief. He has been involved with Hurricane Sandy, post-earthquake relief and support in Haiti in 2010 for two weeks, and as a veterinary advisor for Tails of Hope, a non-profit organization. He has helped design coursework and on-site protocols focused on decontamination and first aid for military, police and transit working dogs through this organization. He currently works with notable experts in this field; veterinarians, military and expert dog handlers trained in detection with explosives, cyber and recovery. He is also the principal designer of a 53-foot mobile veterinary hospital designed to be deployed at a disaster site for at least two weeks. It is the first prototype complete with diagnostic, emergency, and surgical capabilities and is awaiting funding to be built. As of yet, this size unit does not exist in the United States.

Dr. Shorter's educational journey began at Roosevelt High School in Washington, where he graduated in 1970. He then pursued higher education at Tuskegee University, earning a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1974 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. These academic achievements laid the foundation for his successful career, equipping him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in veterinary medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Shorter has been actively involved with several professional organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association and the National Veterinary Emergency Response Teams. He is also a member of the National Association for Black Veterinarians and has mentored several students of color in various veterinary schools. His contributions have been recognized with awards such as the Unsung Hero Award and Above and Beyond from Tails of Hope. He was awarded Veterinarian of the Year by the NJVMA.

Dr. Shorter's personal life is enriched by a variety of interests, including music, playing electric bass, archery, firearm expertise, tennis, hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities. He enjoys traveling with his wife and has a deep appreciation for nature and the ocean. A voracious reader of non-fiction books, Dr. Shorter values continuous learning and personal growth.

Coming from a family of medical professionals, Dr. Shorter was inspired by his mother, a pioneering pediatrician, concert pianist and owner of the Philadelphia Stars Negro League in the 1940s, who adopted him. He takes pride in his daughter's accomplishments as an obstetrician-gynecologist and acknowledges the influence of his upbringing on his ability to connect with clients through their pets. His son is an entertainment attorney in Houston, Texas and mentor for previously incarcerated inmates.

Looking ahead, Dr. Shorter aspires to mentor others by sharing his journey and experiences. He aims to inspire hope and offer guidance to those entering the field of veterinary medicine or pursuing their life paths. He is always open to help with guidance and direction to interns, youth strivers and wishes that to be his legacy.
