GAITHERSBURG, MD, July 24, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sharon L. Telleen, PhD, research associate professor emerita of the University of Illinois at Chicago, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the August 2025 Washington, DC, regional issue of Vogue magazine.

Drawing upon decades-long expertise in psychology and public health, Dr. Telleen thrived as an educator for over 40 years. Retiring from higher education, she was honored with the title of research associate professor emerita at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2011. Since departing from her full-time role at the university, Dr. Telleen has devoted her attention to research efforts, mentoring fellow scholars and sharing her research findings with peers across the globe.

Previously, Dr. Telleen served as an assistant professor in the department of human development at the University of Maryland between 1976 and 1981. Following this position, she relocated to the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health in 1983, serving as an assistant professor. During her three-decade-long career at the acclaimed institution, Dr. Telleen also thrived as a research assistant professor, research associate professor, and director of research for the Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center. Moreover, she served as the interim associate director for research at the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy and a project coordinator evaluator for undergraduate studies.

Licensed to practice psychology in Illinois, with a focus on academic research, since 1983, Dr. Telleen formerly lent her expertise to DePaul University as a lecturer in its Division of Human Development from 1982 to 1983. Later in her career, she was likewise recognized as a mentor with the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows Program through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1997 to 1999.

Allocating much of her time to scholarly research as well, Dr. Telleen has authored and co-authored more than 70 articles and has served as an editor and presenter within the spheres of psychology and public health. To wit, her research was funded by grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Science Foundation and NIH. She co-authored "The Transition from Welfare to Work: Processes, Challenges and Outcomes" in 2002, a comprehensive examination of welfare-to-work initiatives that followed legislative reforms in the mid-1990s.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
Dr. Telleen is highly educated, having completed summer coursework at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration and an internship at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in 1966. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in education, with a concentration on psychology, from Augustana College in 1968. Continuing her education, Dr. Telleen received a Master of Education and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland in 1969 and 1976, respectively.

MEMBERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
Dr. Telleen is passionate about civic advocacy and has collaborated with peers to help disadvantaged communities in her region, with a strong focus on fostering healthier living environments for children and families. Volunteering with the Lutheran Church and the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, she previously acted as a sponsor for Professor Oscar Solano-Foerero, a Fulbright scholar at the University of Los Andes. She also maintained membership with the American Psychological Association.
