Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Savage has established herself as a distinguished figure in the contemporary art world, with a career spanning five decades. Her journey began after earning a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in art from Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio, in 1966. This academic foundation laid the groundwork for her future endeavors, equipping her with a unique perspective that she would later apply to her work in the art world.
In 1968, Ms. Savage began her professional career at the Mayor's Office of Public Service in Boston, Massachusetts. Her tenure there lasted until 1970, during which she honed her skills in public administration and community engagement. The following year, she transitioned to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, where she served as the Director of the Art Rental Gallery. In this role, she catered to both members and corporate clients, further deepening her understanding of the art market.
By 1971, Ms. Savage had become an art consultant, collaborating with artists from Boston and the New England region. Her work involved curating corporate collections and making presentations to architectural firms and corporate art committees. She also played a pivotal role in installing artwork and art commissions in lobbies and outdoor spaces. Her expertise in contemporary art was further solidified when she opened the Sunne Savage Gallery on Newbury Street on June 24, 1975. Specializing in contemporary art, she advised private collectors on acquiring 19th and 20th-century American and European art.
Ms. Savage's contributions to the art world are numerous and significant. She conceptualized the Monumenta sculpture show in Newport, Rhode Island, and introduced Sam Hunter to curate the exhibition featuring 20 sculptures displayed around the mansions and throughout downtown Newport, as well as on Ocean Drive. Additionally, she played a crucial role in advising Herbert Plimpton on the Herbert W. Plimpton Collection of Realist Art at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University. One of her most notable achievements was facilitating the sale at Christies of Charles Willson Peale's painting "George Washington at the Battle of Princeton" for a record price. Along with Keene State College, Keene, NH, Sunne Savage co produced the documentary film on her late husband, "Robert S. Neuman His Life and Art" in 2022 which premiered at The College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, ME.
Ms. Savage's dedication to promoting art extends beyond her gallery work. Ms. Savage is actively involved with several industry-related organizations, including Save Venice Boston since 1980 and The Boston Committee for The Mount since 2016. She has also been a member of various committees, including the Program Committee and Marketing Committee at The College Club of Boston since 1999. She has served on the President's Committee at Wheaton College from 2002 to 2005. She serves on the board of Jumelage, Inc., a sister-city program between Winchester, MA and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France since 2015. She also serves on the Patrons Gala Committee for the Friends of Acadia, Bar Harbor, ME.
Ms. Savage's success can be attributed to her patience and persistence, qualities that have enabled her to navigate the complexities of the art world effectively. Her certifications from the Women's Business Enterprise National Council in 2008 and the State Office of Minority and Women Business Assistance in 2005 further underscore her commitment to excellence and inclusivity.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Ms. Savage enjoys playing tennis, gardening, cooking and traveling. Looking ahead, she aims to represent emerging artists and elevate their work to a broader audience by placing it in both corporate and private collections as well as museum exhibits.
