Dr. Block has had a distinguished academic career, marked by significant contributions to the field of integrated marketing communications. His tenure at Northwestern University, since 1985, culminated in his role as professor emeritus in 2023. During this period, Dr. Block played a pivotal role in transforming the department of advertising into the department of integrated marketing communications (IMC), reflecting his forward-thinking approach to education and industry needs.
Before being named to emeritus status, Dr. Block served as chairperson of the IMC department at Northwestern University for 10 years, during which he established a graduate-level Professional Program and an undergraduate certificate program. His academic journey, in fact, began at MSU where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in advertising, followed by a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy.
Dr. Block's professional journey began at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, where he worked for several years as a senior market analyst. This experience provided him with practical insights into market analysis, which he later integrated into his academic pursuits.
In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Dr. Block has been actively involved in civic organizations, including the local Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Block has served as a principal investigator, co-principal investigator, project director and co-project director on numerous projects and has been called to serve as an expert witness on multiple occasions. He has also served on various academic committees and various editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals. As a presenter at numerous educational conferences and conventions, Dr. Block has shared his expertise with peers worldwide. As an author, he has authored and co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles and professional papers. He has co-authored several books, including "Analyzing Sales Promotion," "Business-to-Business Market Research," "Retail Communities" and "Media Generations." His most recent book, "Rethinking Retail: A Marketer's Guide to Decoding Consumer Preference through Data Analytics," was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2025, further cementing his reputation as a thought leader in marketing analytics.
Among various achievements, Dr. Block's work on a National Science Foundation project exploring applications for two-way cable television has underscored his commitment to innovation. Additionally, he was able to apply analytics to marketing problems, helping retailers with their analytical sophistication.
In light of his success, Dr. Block has received numerous accolades for his work, including a Best Paper Award from the Journal of Advertising Research. He also received a Teacher-Scholar Award from Michigan State University, which highlights his impact on both students and the academic community, as well as recognition as Best Faculty from Northwestern University.
