Before her current endeavors, Dr. Gilchrest was a professor and chair of dermatology at the Boston University School of Medicine from 1985 to 2008, where she became the first woman to chair a department of dermatology in the U.S. In this role, she oversaw a postdoctoral research program sponsored by NIH that studied cellular aging, melanin production, and the means by which the skin protects itself from UV rays. Dr. Gilchrest continued to serve as a professor at Boston University on a part-time basis until 2014, while also managing the Journal of Investigative Dermatology as its editor-in-chief from 2012 to 2017. She began her career in 1977 in the department of dermatology and the division on aging at Harvard Medical School, where she established a tissue culture laboratory to study the aging process in human skin, with support from the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

Dr. Gilchrest's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967. She then earned a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard Medical School in 1971. Her postgraduate training included an internship in internal medicine, a postdoctoral fellowship in Howard Green's laboratory at MIT, and a residency in dermatology at Harvard Teaching Hospitals. These educational achievements laid the foundation for Dr. Gilchrest's groundbreaking research and clinical practice.

Beyond her education, Dr. Gilchrest's professional affiliations are extensive, including her status as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. She is also a charter member of the National Academy of Inventors and has served on various advisory councils related to aging and cancer research. From 1995 to 2005, she was a member of the MIT Corporation. Dr. Gilchrest's involvement with these organizations underscores her commitment to advancing dermatological science.

In addition to her clinical and research endeavors, Dr. Gilchrest has made significant contributions to the medical literature. She has authored or edited over 400 scholarly articles, reviews, textbook chapters, books and other medical publications. Notable works include co-editing "Fitzpatrick's Dermatology in General Medicine" and authoring "Skin Aging," the first textbook on this topic. Dr. Gilchrest's role as associate editor or editorial board member of several research journals further highlights her influence in shaping dermatological discourse.

Dr. Gilchrest has served as a consultant or scientific advisory board member for several pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. She also finds fulfillment in participating in professional conferences as a speaker or attendee, sharing her knowledge and insights with peers worldwide. Her contributions to the field earned her induction into the Dermatology Hall of Fame in 2023.
