FARMINGTON, NM, August 20, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John W. Caldwell III has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Marked by his expertise in unconventional resource development and process improvement, Mr. Caldwell has cultivated a prominent career as an upstream oil and gas professional. As the owner and president of Desert Rain Consulting, LLC since 2012, he has dedicated himself to providing consulting services and sharing best practices for oil and gas companies around the world. Concurrently, he serves as a technical advisor for Solomon Associates, which helps clients throughout the energy sector find data-driven solutions to enhance efficiency.
Prior to his current roles, Mr. Caldwell served at ConocoPhillips as an operations advisor for five years. His tenure at Burlington Resources spanned more than 25 years, during which he held various engineering and production management positions. Notably, from 2002 to 2006, he was a senior engineering advisor, where he contributed significantly to major basin projects, identified hundreds of millions of dollars in value and led multiple internal training teams. His earlier roles at Burlington included engineering supervisor and production engineer positions, where he specialized in reservoir and production engineering projects across several states from 1980 to 1988.
Mr. Caldwell's storied career began at Texaco, where he worked as a production engineer from 1978 to 1980. During this time, he gained valuable early experience in staff supervision and was responsible for 1,500 wells in southeastern New Mexico. His professional journey was further enriched by his role as an expert witness on reservoir issues for state oil commissions spanning Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, North Dakota, New Mexico, Arkansas, Montana and Wyoming.
Though his career counts many achievements in the oil and gas industry, Mr. Caldwell is particularly proud of leading a team at Burlington Resources that booked over 1 trillion cubic feet of gas in the San Juan Basin's Fruitland coal formation around 1989. This monumental accomplishment supported extensive drilling efforts for approximately 5,000 wells and rigorous subsurface evaluations that significantly impacted Burlington as well as the industry at large.
A proud alumnus of the University of Idaho, Mr. Caldwell graduated cum laude with honors in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering. This academic foundation was instrumental in his work in reservoir analysis and unconventional resource development. To expand his knowledge and qualifications, he was certified as a professional engineer by the New Mexico State Board in 2020 and the Oklahoma State Board in 1985.
Also deeply committed to civic engagement, Mr. Caldwell has served as board chair for both the New Mexico State Chapter and the Northwest New Mexico Chapter of The American National Red Cross. His outstanding professional accomplishments and dedication to community service saw him previously selected for inclusion in International Who's Who.
Happily married for more than 40 years, Mr. Caldwell is now devoted to mentoring younger professionals in the oil and gas industry. He finds fulfillment in sharing his wealth of experience with emerging talents, particularly through recruitment efforts at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro. Additionally, he remains actively involved with the American Red Cross, valuing the opportunity to give back to his community while fostering growth among future leaders in his field.
