In her current capacity as the deputy mission director for India at the United States Agency for International Development since 2023, she oversees all operational aspects of the mission, including contracting, finance, human resources, performance and conduct. In her role, she also manages human resources issues and assumes representational duties in the absence of the mission director or supervisor, and Dr. Huerta ensures compliance with federal law and adapts to any shifts in administration policies.

As a capable and engaging public speaker, Dr. Huerta's appointment priorities also include representing the agency at trade forums, as well as responding to and briefing congressional delegations. She also appreciates the opportunities to mentor and coach junior officers and emerging talent at the middle management tier, ensuring that all personnel meet agency standards. Additionally, Dr. Huerta participates in several working groups as the representative for the United States Agency for International Development.

Before accepting her current role, Dr. Huerta earned critical insights through a series of distinct positions with the United States Agency for International Development. She excelled as an assistant professor at the School of National Security and Resource Strategy from 2021 to 2023, leveraging her extensive field experience to shape the educational and professional development of future leaders in national security and resource strategy. From 2020 to 2021, Dr. Huerta was a senior development advisor for Fiji at the agency, where she provided strategic guidance on development initiatives and fostered partnerships to advance sustainable growth in the region.

Between 2016 and 2020, Dr. Huerta held the role of country officer director in Laos with the United States Agency for International Development. She counts the establishment of the Laos country office, in a nation that had a challenging relationship with the United States government, as a significant career achievement, as she methodically navigated operational challenges, gained support from local authorities and forged sustainable relationships with various line ministries involved in the process. Additionally, from 2014 to 2016, Dr. Huerta was deployed by the agency as a monitoring and evaluation specialist in Afghanistan, where she thrived in assessing program effectiveness and ensuring accountability across multiple projects.

Dr. Huerta's earlier assignments with the United States Agency for International Development included a period as the supervisory program officer in Barbados from 2013 to 2014, program officer in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2013 and program officer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2009 to 2011. She was also named the program officer in Washington, DC from 2008 to 2009, where she focused expressly on managing diverse portfolios focused on humanitarian assistance and development. Before joining the agency, Dr. Huerta was an international program and technical specialist at World Vision from 2007 to 2008, contributing her expertise to global development projects, and in 2005, she worked as an international consultant with ACDI/VOCA.

Dr. Huerta's commitment to service began early in her career through civic engagement with the United States Peace Corps, and she was assigned to a post in Mali as an agriculture specialist from 1994 to 1997 before becoming a volunteer leader in Mozambique in 1998. Comprehensive academic training has also proven vital to her advancement and includes a Bachelor of Science in agricultural communications from the University of Georgia. Subsequently, she pursued graduate studies and now holds a Master of Science in agricultural economics from the University of Tennessee, which Dr. Huerta completed in 2001, and a Doctor of Philosophy in agricultural development from Purdue University, finished in 2005.

Throughout her career, Dr. Huerta's dedication has been acknowledged with distinct accolades, including the Joint Civilian Commendation Medal from the Department of Defense in 2025. She attributes her success to empathy and openness, qualities she tries to cultivate in her team members by encouraging open dialogue. Dr. Huerta's strong belief in the power of collaboration prompts her to also maintain a robust network, and she is an active member of professional organizations that include the American Agricultural Economics Association, the American Association for Agricultural Education, the American Dairy Science Association, the Association for International Agricultural and Extension Education, Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society, the Golden Key National Honor Society and the Rural Sociological Society.

Dr. Huerta enjoys traveling and scuba diving outside of her professional commitments. Looking toward the future, she aims to continue her impactful work at the United States Agency for International Development while seeking opportunities with organizations that advocate for marginalized populations, such as homeless individuals and immigrants, and those that curate meaningful solutions for women's issues, both domestically and internationally.
