Mr. Guillory's illustrious career spans over five decades, marked by a steadfast commitment to justice and civil rights. His journey began with a pivotal moment at age 15 when he was arrested for attempting to borrow a book from a segregated library. This experience ignited his passion for law, steering him away from a planned career in medicine. He has since become a prominent figure in legal advocacy, working across numerous states and leading state agencies in Maryland, Illinois, Washington and Pennsylvania. His legal practice has primarily focused on criminal and domestic law in the bayou communities of South Louisiana.

Currently, Mr. Guillory serves as an attorney at the Law Offices of Elbert L. Guillory, where he has overseen and managed operations for 16 years. His extensive experience includes serving as a member of the Louisiana State Senate for District 24 in 2009 and as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives for District 40 from 2007 to 2009. Before assuming these roles, he served as the managing attorney at Acadiona Legal Service Corp. in Opelousas from 1985 to 1987. Additionally, he maintained a private practice in Opelousas from 1981 to 1985 and again in 1987.

Mr. Guillory's earlier career highlights include his tenure as executive director of the Seattle Human Rights Department from 1980 to 1983 and as affirmative action manager for the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System from 1977 to 1979. He also served as executive director of the Maryland Commission on Human Rights in Baltimore from 1973 to 1977 and division director of the Pennsylvania Human Rights Department in Harrisburg from 1972 to 1973. His academic contributions include serving as an instructor at Rutgers Law School in Newark from 1971 to 1972.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Guillory served from 1964 to 1968, further enriching his diverse professional background. His academic achievements include earning a Bachelor of Arts from Norfolk State College in Virginia in 1968, followed by a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers University in 1971. He also completed postgraduate coursework at New York Theological Seminary in 1972. These educational experiences have been instrumental in shaping his expertise in law, theology and politics.

Mr. Guillory is an esteemed member of several professional organizations, including the New Jersey State Bar Association since 1972 and the Louisiana State Bar Association since 1986. He is also affiliated with the American Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Federal Bar Association, the American Academy of Political Science, the American Society of Public Administrators and various local bar associations throughout Louisiana.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Guillory is deeply involved in civic activities. He founded the Guillory Family Toy Drive over three decades ago and serves on several boards that operate shelters for the homeless. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Superior Public Service Award from Afro-American Newspapers and the Harriet Tubman Community Service Award from the Association of Black Media Workers. He has also been admitted to the Louisiana Justice Hall of Fame.

Mr. Guillory has also made significant contributions to media through his work as a columnist for Metropolitan Magazine and African American News and World Report, as well as a contributor to newspapers in Baltimore, Seattle, and Afro-American publications. Despite his demanding career, he finds time to enjoy mountain climbing, skiing, swimming, photography, dancing, kickboxing and traveling with his seven children.
