FORT WORTH, TX, May 26, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As one of the most recognizable cars ever produced, the Volkswagen Beetle was built in countless configurations for markets around the globe—but few are as distinct or desirable as the European-market 1960 Beetle featured in the Ron Sturgeon Collection at the DFW Car & Toy Museum. Finished in a soft Beryl Green over beige vinyl with a factory-style sliding canvas sunroof, this beautifully restored example embodies vintage Volkswagen excellence, complete with rare details often unseen in U.S. models.
Originally believed to have been sold by Hans Moosmaier Volkswagen in Bamberg, Germany, this Beetle eventually made its way to the U.S., residing on the East Coast before heading west to Washington State in 2011. A multi-year restoration was completed in 2015, including body refinishing, interior upgrades, and mechanical enhancements, all performed with period-correct care.
Power comes from a replacement 1,192cc air-cooled flat-four, mated to a four-speed manual transaxle and fed by a Solex 28 PCI downdraft carburetor with an oil bath air cleaner. Under current ownership, the engine has received a rebuilt carburetor and heater boxes, a replacement generator, and new seals, gaskets, and a battery—ensuring it remains a reliable and enjoyable vintage driver.
Exterior highlights include semaphore turn indicators, which were phased out in U.S. models after 1955 but remained on European Beetles through 1960. Additional details include fender-mounted turn signals, "snowflake" taillight lenses, and chrome bumpers with overriders. Inside, you'll find subtle early-era features such as a radio block-off plate, fuel reserve flap, and a foot-operated high/low beam switch. The two-spoke steering wheel, adorned with a Wolfsburg-crest horn ring, frames a restored 140-km/h VDO speedometer, reset during a 2020 refurbishment.
"This 1960 Beetle is everything you'd want in a European classic—it's stylish, thoughtfully restored, and full of unique details that make it stand out," said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. "From the semaphore signals to the canvas sunroof, every piece tells a story."
Now showcased alongside over 200 collector vehicles and more than 3,000 vintage toys and artifacts, this Euro-spec Beetle offers a rare window into the design language and driving culture of postwar Europe.
