FORT WORTH, TX, April 07, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- An uncommon bridge between eras, the 1953 Volkswagen Beetle "Zwitter" Sunroof Deluxe in the Ron Sturgeon Collection at the DFW Car & Toy Museum offers a rare glimpse into an unusual moment in Beetle production—enhanced by a custom drivetrain and performance upgrades that take it far beyond stock.
Built in March 1953, this 11G Deluxe Sedan features what's known as a "Zwitter" body—a unique transitional design produced for only a few months that combined the split rear window of earlier models with the updated dashboard and features of the later oval-window Beetles. The result is a highly collectible configuration that appeals to purists and performance enthusiasts alike.
Finished in elegant black, this Zwitter has been reimagined with a host of modern upgrades, beginning with a 2,007cc flat-four engine built by Old Speed of Paramount, California. Equipped with dual Weber carburetors, an Engle 110 camshaft, high-flow cylinder heads with 40mm x 35.5mm valves, and a stainless-steel muffler with an oval tip, this air-cooled powerhouse delivers spirited performance while retaining its vintage heart.
Power is routed to the rear wheels via a fully synchronized four-speed manual transaxle, and stopping power comes from four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes, offering modern control with a classic look. The electrical system has been upgraded to 12 volts, improving reliability and lighting output while maintaining the car's mid-century character.
Interior details include a two-spoke steering wheel with a gold Wolfsburg crest, pop-out semaphore turn indicators, a green-letter VDO speedometer, vertical fuel gauge, Motorola radio, and a hand-wound dash clock. A factory-style sliding sunroof completes the Deluxe package, offering an open-air driving experience in true vintage style.
"The Zwitter is already a rare and coveted Beetle, but this one takes it to the next level," said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. "It's fast, detailed, and beautifully built—with a timeless silhouette and a heartbeat that's anything but ordinary."
Displayed alongside more than 200 classic cars and over 3,000 vintage toys, this 1953 Zwitter represents the creative blend of originality and performance that defines the spirit of the museum.
