Before joining Novartis, Mr. Medland served as Vice President and Global Antiviral Lead and U.S. Antiviral Lead at Pfizer from 2021 to 2024. During this period, he played a pivotal role in building and leading the commercial organization to launch Paxlovid under the Emergency Use Authorization during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, Paxlovid became one of the most widely used pharmaceutical products in history, treating over 10 million patients within two years and achieving a 90 percent market share in the United States. His efforts contributed to Pfizer's revenue growth and supported global efforts to return to normalcy by driving awareness and education about the availability of an effective treatment option for COVID-19. Mr. Medland collaborated closely with both federal and state government agencies while in these roles including members of the Biden administration.

During the preceding year, Mr. Medland held the role of Vice President of the U.S. Specialty Brands portfolio at Pfizer, overseeing a range of specialty pharmaceutical products and leading cross-functional teams to deliver business objectives. He also served as the Senior Director of Business Operations, supporting Pfizer's Hospital business unit's Global President.

Mr. Medland's earlier tenure at Pfizer, which began in 2005, included serving in a variety of commercial, marketing, operations, and sales leadership roles spanning multiple disease and therapeutic areas, including but not limited to Primary Care, Oncology, Cardiology, Urology, and Pain Management.

Before entering the pharmaceutical sector, Mr. Medland built foundational experience in telecommunications with Sprint Nextel. He served as District Business Manager from 2004 to 2005 after holding roles as Retail Store Manager, Indirect Account Executive and Senior Sales Representative.

Throughout his career, Mr. Medland has earned numerous accolades recognizing his leadership and dedication to excellence. In 2024, he was named one of Pharmaceutical Executive Magazine's Pharma Marketing Top Movers and Shakers and received both the Integrated Product Strategy Team of the Year and Performance Vigilance Team of the Year awards from Novartis. His achievements at Pfizer include the Biopharma Breakthrough Superstars Award in 2022, the Premier Performance Award and Be Greater Than Oncology Award in 2017 and the Bruce Haskitt Leadership Award in 2012, as well as the PM360 ELITE Leader of the Future Award. Earlier in his career, he earned the Pinnacle Club Platinum honor from Sprint PCS for being one of the nation's top sales representatives and was inducted into both the USC Chapter of Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Mr. Medland's academic background reflects a dedication to lifelong learning inspired by his mother's example as a first-generation graduate who returned to school later in life. In his own journey, he earned a Master of Health Administration from the University of Southern California in 2014 and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Maryland Global Campus in Adelphi in 2012. His foundational work earned him a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing from the University of California, Riverside.

Reflecting on his career, Mr. Medland attributes much of his professional success to his high learning agility, intellectual curiosity, and ability to adapt his leadership style to fit the specific needs of a given situation and his team. He also emphasizes that his three foundational pillars that serve as his north star are purpose, people and culture: obsessing over patient outcomes and prioritizing service to others above personal gain. Beyond his professional pursuits, he values time spent with his family, including his wife and three children, as well as traveling, working out, golfing, enjoying nature and spending time with their dog.
