Destinations such as the Himalayas, Tibet, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Argentina, Chile, the Galapagos Islands and Easter Island have provided him with unique photographic opportunities. Among his most cherished experiences is a cruise down the Nile in Egypt, during which he captured some of his most memorable images.

Before dedicating himself fully to photography, Dr. Mulder spent ten years as a history teacher after completing his doctoral studies. His academic background informed his teaching approach and later influenced his work as an author and photographer. Before entering academia, he contributed significantly to Church World Service. In this capacity, he collaborated closely with the chief financial officer on a program designed to assist refugees, particularly those processed through a major office in Nairobi that served individuals from regions such as Syria and Somalia. Dr. Mulder was responsible for ensuring that program funds were allocated appropriately to support refugee resettlement efforts. He worked alongside judges across the United States and Canada to facilitate legal immigration pathways and citizenship for refugees. Since 2016, he has remained an active donor to this cause, recognizing the importance of private support amid anticipated funding cuts.

Dr. Mulder's academic achievements have played a pivotal role in shaping his career trajectory. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in history from the University of Chicago in 1984 after completing a Bachelor of Arts in European history at Kalamazoo College in 1973. His resilience and adaptability have been central to his success; he attributes much of his progress to an ability to persevere through setbacks and continually move forward. This determination was particularly evident when he overcame initial challenges in publishing his doctoral dissertation—a process that ultimately resulted in successful publication with another publisher.

A prolific author and photographer, Dr. Mulder has published several works that showcase both his historical insight and artistic vision. His recent publications include "The American West: Photography of Grand Canyon and Beyond," "Our World Revealed: A Journey Through Photographic Images Revised Edition," and "Our World Revealed: A Journey Through Photographic Images" in 2025, and "In The Heart Of Africa: An Expedition Into Nature's Untouched Beauty" and "Capturing Wilderness: Exploring Nature's Beauty Through Photography" in 2023. Additionally, he authored a history book that received favorable reviews from an Oxford professor, a recognition that stands among his proudest accomplishments.

Dr. Mulder is also a member of the Professional Photographers of America, reflecting his standing within the professional community.
