Since 2020, he has served as a partner at Haynes Boone, where he is involved in emerging growth companies, venture capital and mergers and acquisitions. Leading a team of 10 professionals and drawing on the expertise of lawyers from other offices, Mr. Royse has played a pivotal role in expanding the firm's corporate practice on the West Coast. His transition to Haynes Boone was driven by the need for a more robust infrastructure to support his clients' increasingly complex needs, including public offerings, international transactions and regulatory matters.
Before joining Haynes Boone, Mr. Royse founded Royse Law Firm in 2006. As a solo practitioner, he successfully grew the firm to accommodate 30 lawyers, demonstrating his entrepreneurial acumen and commitment to client service. The firm gained recognition for its expertise in working with startups. However, as his clients expanded and their legal requirements became more complex, Mr. Royse recognized the need to join a larger platform to serve their interests better.
Mr. Royse was a partner at Montgomery Law Group from 2003 to 2006 and GCA Law Partners LLP from 1995 to 2003 where he advised technology startups and investors during the formative years of Silicon Valley's growth.
Mr. Royse began his legal career as an attorney at Berliner Cohen from 1991 to 1995, following a stint as a tax associate at Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy LLP from 1988 to 1991. He launched his professional career as an attorney at Niles, Hansen, Davies in 1984.
Throughout his career, Mr. Royse has demonstrated a commitment to advancing technology-driven industries. In 2012, he established the Silicon Valley Agricultural Technology group, which brings together technologists, farmers, venture capitalists, researchers and government officials to foster innovation in food production. The group's annual conferences have featured prominent speakers, including US Senators, Congressmen, Governors and international dignitaries such as the Secretary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. More recently, he has replicated this collaborative model in oncology technology through Cancer Patient Lab, recognizing the need for faster market adoption of life-saving innovations.
Mr. Royse's professional affiliations reflect his standing in the legal community. He is a member of the American Bar Association House of Delegates since 2016 and the American College of Tax Counsel since 2018 and has been a fellow of the American Bar Foundation since 2013. He has been a member of STEP since 2021 and has been a member of the State Bar of California and the American Bar Association since 1991.
His academic background laid a strong foundation for his achievements. Mr. Royse earned a Master of Laws degree from New York University School of Law in 1989, following his receipt of a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Dakota in 1984. He completed a Bachelor of Science in business administration with an emphasis in accounting at the University of North Dakota.
Mr. Royse holds several certifications that have contributed to his multifaceted expertise, including a Certified Public Accountant designation (non-attest, inactive) from the California Board of Accountancy since 2019, a white belt legal lean sigma and project management designation from Legal Lean Sigma Institute since 2015 and a certified public accountant (inactive) from North Dakota Society of Certified Public Accountants since 1981.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Mr. Royse is deeply engaged in civic activities and mentorship. He has served as director and board member for Cancer Patient Lab since 2024 and Menlo Park Sister Cities since 2021. He has contributed to municipal governance through roles on the Park Finance and Audit Committee for the City of Menlo since 2017 and previously chaired its Finance and Audit Committee from 2017 to 2023.
Mr. Royse has served as vice chair of the Tax Policy and Simplification Committee for the American Bar Association Tax Section since 2015. He is also the vice chairman of the Tax Committee for the American Bar Association's Business Law Section, a position he has held since 2014. Additionally, he is a member of the Federal Affairs Committee for the Lincoln Club of Northern California.
His dedication to mentorship is evident through ongoing involvement with the Momentum Accelerator since 2013 and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Northern California since 2012. He has mentored entrepreneurs at Fargo Plug and Play Food at Plug and Play Tech Center from 2021 to 2024, Draper University from 2021 to 2024 and Founders Institute Modesto Chapter from 2020 to 2024.

Mr. Royse's academic influence extends into teaching roles as instructor or professor at Stanford Continuing Studies, Golden Gate University School of Law and the Center for International Studies.
Born in Mandan, Mr. Royse balances his professional commitments with personal pursuits, including triathlons—where he has participated for two decades—and mountaineering, which began with his first climbing trip in 1990.
