LAUREL, MD, September 17, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Fralmer R. Nierva has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Mr. Nierva has established a distinguished career spanning four decades in the field of laboratory medicine, anatomic pathology and biochemistry. Currently as the Laboratory Director at Integrated Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics (ICMD) since 2016, he oversees Surgical and Anatomic Pathology as well as associated molecular services which includes day-to-day technical and administrative operations. In this capacity, he manages a team of 14 professionals in the surgical and anatomic pathology laboratory and three in the molecular laboratory, which also conducts research. He is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, supporting clients in establishing their own laboratories and facilitating advanced and basic testing through the main facility in Greenbelt, Maryland. Under his leadership, the organization has successfully built four laboratories for physician practices and recently opened a satellite laboratory in Boca Raton, Florida to streamline logistics for clients in the Miami, Dade areas. ICMD was one of the few private laboratories utilized by the State of Maryland for regional COVID-19 detection and testing during the initial months of the pandemic.
Mr. Nierva has served as a Senior Technical Consultant at Pitts Management Association in 2015, where he provided expert guidance on Surgical and Anatomic Pathology Laboratory build. Through this role, he was instrumental in the initial planning of laboratory consolidated services for Norton HealthCare and University of Kentucky HealthCare.
In 2015, he had a dual role as Laboratory Manager and Technical Consultant for the Pathology Laboratory, GI Associates of Maryland, where he successfully completed an infrastructure and redesign of their histopathology and cytopathology laboratory.
From 2010 to 2014, Mr. Nierva held the position of System Manager for Anatomic Pathology services at Inova Health Systems, Northern Virginia's largest health care system. There, he was instrumental in building an integrated pathology laboratory consolidating five hospital laboratories into a centralized laboratory enhancing laboratory service delivery across the region. This realized net monthly cost containment and reduced standard costs for testing within the enterprise.
In 2009, he was asked to join the Adventist Hospital Pathology Practice Group and had also been involved with Cytology & Histology Services of Maryland (CSM) managing anatomic pathology laboratory services in four hospitals for CSM.
Between 2006 and 2009, Mr. Nierva worked with Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic, where he played a pivotal role in constructing a functional regional anatomic pathology laboratory consolidating two pathology practices (Northern Virginia and Maryland based) developing and implementing operating policies and procedures which assimilated surgical pathology processing from 32 medical facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region and coordinated administrative support for 12 pathologists servicing a tri-state region. This resulted in an initial annualized cost containment of $2.5M with a net annual savings of $1.2M.
His expertise was further utilized as technical and administrative consultant at Doctor's Pathology Services from 2005 to 2006 and in laboratory technical operations at Diagnostic Pathology Services from 2004 to 2006.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Nierva spent a decade with Washington Hospital Center from 1994 to 2004 in surgical and anatomic pathology services, establishing operational controls resulting in high quality customer service, technical quality and productivity assuring high compliance to turn-around-time and case prioritization requirements. Under the mentorship of the Laboratory Chairman, Mr. Nierva was regarded as one of the best managers three-years running.
Mr. Nierva's foundational experience was shaped by his eight years of military service as a histotechnologist and pathologist assistant at Bethesda Naval Hospital (now Walter Reed Medical Center). During this period, he was entrusted with processing tissue specimens for President Ronald Reagan during multiple medical procedures. He also handled confidential specimens for Mrs. Reagan under strict protocols befitting their VIP status.
Throughout his career, Mr. Nierva has demonstrated exceptional skills in building laboratories—having developed or restructured approximately 15 facilities over 40 years. Mr. Nierva is President and CEO of FR ALMER Ventures, a Maryland State LLC dedicated in providing consultative services in helping Physician Group Practices in building Surgical and Anatomic Pathology Laboratories. His consultative service for Laboratory Builds focuses on complete design engineering and planning of infrastructure of basic services for anatomic pathology laboratories to include cytopathology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, histochemistry and respective ancillary services. In addition, his company is proficient in restructuring and redesign workflow infrastructures improving workflow and efficiency of workload demand and production using Lean and Six-Sigma principles. Mr. Nierva realizes that this space is very labor-intensive, however introduces innovative automation and Artificial Intelligence to implement efficiencies.
Mr. Nierva served as a member of the National Society for Histotechnology and serves as an associate surveyor and inspector for the College of American Pathologists.
Mr. Nierva's academic background includes a master's degree in biochemistry from the University of the Philippines in 1979 and a Bachelor of Science in public health preventative medicine and immunology from the same institution in 1974. He also completed specialized coursework and certifications in histopathology and pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Nierva is active within civic circles through volunteering at special events. He is also recognized as a speaker on building laboratories, a subject on which he has shared insights drawn from decades of hands-on experience. He credits his success to meticulous attention to detail, strong networking skills and a management philosophy centered on aligning team members' talents with their roles to maximize effectiveness. He also believes that there are certain aspects of life that science cannot fully explain and attributes these mysteries to God. He feels that there is always a greater design for everyone, no matter their beginnings.
Born in the Philippines, he spent his formative years in Okinawa, Japan, where his father, a woodwind instrument musician established a music school. His sister still maintains the school. Outside of work, Mr. Nierva enjoys stamp and coin collection which he inherited from his father. He also enjoys traveling and visiting his grandchildren. Looking ahead, he is committed to passing on his knowledge by mentoring future leaders within his current laboratory as they build new facilities and remains open to opportunities to develop laboratories elsewhere across the United States and worldwide.
