Dr. Murphy is an experienced chemical engineer who currently serves as the chief executive officer of Green Carbon Nanostructures Corporation, a role he has held since 2023. In this capacity, he leads the company's efforts in developing advanced nanostructure technologies, drawing on his expertise in alternative energy and chemical processing methods, environmental emission reductions and green carbon nanostructures. Headquartered in Skaneateles, New York, Dr. Murphy's company is steadfast about operating in an environmentally sustainable manner to reduce GHG emissions. His leadership is informed by decades of interdisciplinary experience and a commitment to innovation at the intersection of chemistry, engineering and finance.

Since 2005, Dr. Murphy has also served as the founder, president, and chief executive officer of Valuation Risk & Strategy LLC. Through this firm, he provides strategic guidance on valuation and risk management for clients navigating complex financial landscapes. His work in this area is distinguished by Dr. Murphy's ability to synthesize technical knowledge with legal and economic insights.

Beginning in 2022, Dr. Murphy has served as a mentor for chemical engineering students worldwide through their connection with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). To date this numbers over 2,300 students. Between 2010 and 2013, he was the director at Berkeley Research Group LLC in New York City, providing litigation support and expert testimony. In 2010, Dr. Murphy was the national director of derivatives and risk analytics practice at UHY LLP, Certified Public Accountants, in New York City, where he led teams responsible for evaluating complex derivative instruments and implementing risk mitigation strategies.

From 2007 to 2009, Dr. Murphy was principal at Charles River Associates in Houston, Texas. He also worked as a senior manager of the valuation practice at Ernst & Young, starting in 2004, and as a senior manager of the global energy and capital markets practice at Deloitte, beginning in 2000.

Dr. Murphy garnered experience in academia between 1998 and 2000 as a professor of finance at Kansas State University. During this period, he collaborated with Professor Kenneth J. Klabunde on research into nanoscale materials. This formative experience influenced his later work in nanostructures. Dr. Murphy also taught at Syracuse University between 1986 and 1995 as an adjunct professor of finance and technology commercialization law.

Among other roles, Dr. Murphy held positions with Air Liquide and NASA's Johnson Space Center, both in Houston. His early tenure included his role as a research engineer at DuPont de Nemours Inc. from 1974 to 1985, as well as his position as an engineer with General Electric Company between 1972 and 1974.

Dr. Murphy's educational background is extensive. He received a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering, with distinction, from Clarkson University, followed by a Master of Business Administration in accounting and finance, a Doctor of Jurisprudence specializing in technology commercialization, and a Doctor of Philosophy in finance and quantitative methods from Syracuse University in 1987, 1993 and 1995, respectively. Dr. Murphy also earned a postgraduate degree in technology and innovation management and a second postgraduate degree in computer and information sciences and support services from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2023 and 2025, respectively, in addition to postdoctoral studies at both MIT and Harvard University, further enhancing his expertise across scientific disciplines. Beyond his primary studies, he holds several certifications, including in engineering models from the Sloan School of Management at MIT, valid through 2035, and in the architecture of complex systems from MIT, valid through 2035.

Active in his professional community, Dr. Murphy is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). He has also participated in podcasts hosted by universities and AIChE chapters worldwide, sharing insights with a global audience of aspiring engineers. Currently mentoring over 2,300 chemical engineering students internationally, Dr. Murphy provides guidance on both academic development and professional growth.

Dr. Murphy's civic engagement includes involvement with Habitat for Humanity, reflecting his commitment to community service that extends beyond his professional achievements. He has also become recognized for serving as a board member of the college of law at his alma mater, Syracuse University, for 10 years. Among Dr. Murphy's achievements during this time was the establishment of a lecture hall named after the law professor who inspired his interest in patent law.

Having contributed significantly to scholarly literature, Dr. Murphy recently co-authored 'Tier 3 Gasoline Production: Challenges and Opportunities for Refiners' via Hydrocarbon Processing Magazine in 2023. He has also authored articles on derivative models, such as those presented at the Association of American Law Schools' annual meeting. Dr. Murphy is currently co-authoring several book chapters that address emerging topics within finance, law, engineering, and public health innovation.

Among numerous honors received throughout his career, Dr. Murphy received the NASA Space Act Award, presented for repurposing NASA-discovered oxygen plasma technology into RNA-based chemical reactors foundational to mRNA vaccine platforms. He also received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award from Syracuse University and was a scholarship recipient of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

A lifelong learner who values flexibility and a growth mindset, Dr. Murphy credits much of his success to great advisers, mentors, advocates, as well as an enduring passion for science, mathematics, engineering, technology transfer and patent law. Looking ahead, he has enrolled in the technology and innovation acceleration program at MIT and intends to further support society by mentoring future generations as an adjunct professor, keynote speaker and advocate for interdisciplinary education across the science, law, business and engineering fields.
