Dr. Evans is also affiliated with Lucas Surgical Group, where he continues to advance his clinical practice.
Before his current roles, Dr. Evans contributed significantly to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital from 2019 to 2024. He served as medical director of trauma from 2022 to 2024 and was department chair of robotic surgery from 2021 to 2024. During his tenure, he was instrumental in establishing the hospital's robotics program in Vidalia, Georgia. Despite initial challenges in securing administrative support, Dr. Evans's leadership led the program to become the most productive small volume hospital in its region. The rapid growth necessitated the acquisition of two surgical robots within eighteen months, marking a significant milestone for the facility and underscoring his commitment to advancing surgical technology.
From 2018 to 2019, Dr. Evans practiced as a general surgeon at Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, where he further honed his skills in both traditional and minimally invasive procedures. His earlier experience includes serving as a general surgeon at Christus Ochsner Health Southwestern Louisiana from 2016 to 2017.
Dr. Evans completed his general surgery residency at the University of Utah Health from 2012 to 2016, following an initial residency at Keesler Medical Center 81st Medical Group from 2009 to 2011. His foundational medical training began during his service as a captain in the United States Air Force from 2005 to 2011, where he trained in general surgery at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. After leaving military service in 2012, he completed a non-ACGME cardiothoracic surgery mini fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before finalizing his general surgery training at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Throughout his career, Dr. Evans has developed recognized expertise in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, particularly robotic hernia procedures. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the Christian Medical and Dental Association.
Dr. Evans's academic background is extensive and has been integral to his professional achievements. He is currently pursuing an Executive Master of Business Administration at the University of North Alabama, further expanding his leadership capabilities within health care administration. He completed a fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2012 after earning a Doctor of Medicine from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta in 2009. He holds a Master of Science in biomedical sciences from Barry University in Miami Shores, awarded in 2005, and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in biology from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee in 2003. His early education includes a diploma from Alabama School of Mathematics and Science in Mobile.
Dr. Evans maintains multiple certifications that underscore his commitment to excellence and patient safety, including advanced cardiovascular life support and basic life support through the American Heart Association Inc., board certification in surgery by the American Board of Surgery, fellow status with the American College of Surgeons, and active medical licenses through the Mississippi Board of Medical Licensure, Alabama Board of Examiners and State of Georgia.
His adaptability and ability to quickly assimilate new information have been central to his success. Exposure to diverse perspectives across both coasts and within military and civilian medicine has shaped him into a well-rounded provider who values flexibility and continuous learning. Dr. Evans's early fascination with medicine began at age five, inspired by physicians' diagnostic skills and a desire to help others. This passion deepened when he researched cardiac surgery prior to his grandmother's procedure. Growing up in Thomasville, Alabama, he observed local physicians referring patients elsewhere for specialized care; this motivated him to become the specialist who could provide solutions locally.
A proponent of technological advancement within medicine, Dr. Evans has championed innovations such as electronic medical records (EMRs), serving as a super user for multiple service lines and facilitating EMR implementation across various departments.
In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Evans received the Pillar Award from Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in 2022. His scholarly work includes co-authoring "Cold Injury in the United States Military Population: Current Trends and Comparison with Past Conflicts" published in the Journal of Surgical Education Vol 76, contributing articles on solid omental tumors and thymomas for Medscape, and presenting "Rural Surgery and Robotics: Building a Program for the Future" at the National Medical Association Surgical Section Annual Scientific Business Meeting in 2024.
