During his tenure, he achieved his most notable accomplishment by securing more than $650,000 in state aid to establish a free preschool program in Garwood. He played a pivotal role in repurposing an old elementary school into the district's preschool hub, making early education accessible to local students. His ability to think outside the box and consistently do more with less was instrumental in this achievement.
From 2010 to 2022, Mr. Kinney served as the Director of Special Services for Cedar Grove Schools. Over the past 14 years, he has developed expertise in special education and strategic planning, earning recognition for his leadership and dedication. In 2022, he was named Essex County Director of Special Services of the Year, recognizing his significant impact on the district and the broader educational community.
Mr. Kinney began his career as a special education teacher in the Roselle Park School District before moving into vocational administration in Warren County, New Jersey. This foundational experience shaped his approach to educational leadership and informed his later roles as director and superintendent.
Throughout his career, Mr. Kinney has been an active member of several professional organizations, including the New Jersey Association of Superintendents, the New Jersey Administrators and Educational Leaders and the National Association of School Superintendents. These affiliations have provided him with valuable opportunities for collaboration and professional growth.
Mr. Kinney's academic background includes coursework toward a Doctor of Education at Centenary University. He earned a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Administration from Kean University in Union, New Jersey, in 2005. His educational achievements have supported his rise through various administrative positions and contributed to his success in implementing innovative programming across multiple districts.
He attributes his accomplishments to a supportive family, encouraging colleagues and a strong personal drive to make a positive impact on students and faculty members alike.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mr. Kinney was civically engaged with Home for Good Dogs in Berkeley Heights. He has also been recognized with the Roots and Wings Award from Montclair State University in 2012.
In his personal life, Mr. Kinney is married to his wife, Heather, a school social worker. They have three daughters and a son: George, who is studying political science at TCNJ, Madelyn, who is studying public health at the University of Maryland, Nicol and Abbey, both high school seniors exploring college options. Mr. Kinney enjoys spending time with his family and his Catahoula Leopard dog, Edward. He also enjoys performing as a cover band singer.
Looking ahead, Mr. Kinney plans to advance district programming by integrating emerging artificial intelligence technology to benefit students, staff and the broader community in Mountainside. He aims to complete his doctoral degree through Centenary University and apply those skills to further improve the district's offerings. Additionally, he aspires to continue as a Superintendent role while eventually teach at the college level at institutions such as Kean University or Montclair State University to help prepare future educators to be sincere, genuine and innovative leaders in their field.
