Dr. Miller assumed the role of director at the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute in 2004, a position he held until 2019. Concurrently serving as senior vice president of the zoo during this period, he played a pivotal role in establishing the conservation department and managing numerous projects aimed at preserving wildlife.
Commencing his remarkable career at the Saint Louis Zoo in 1981, Dr. Miller served as a resident veterinarian until 1983. His expertise and dedication quickly propelled him through various roles, including staff veterinarian, head veterinarian, senior veterinarian and associate veterinarian from 1983 to 2004. During this time, Dr. Miller became renowned for his specialization in rhinoceros medicine, particularly that of the black rhino, earning him the moniker "black rhino guy." His work involved addressing complex diseases such as hemolytic anemia and skin conditions of unknown origin.
Dr. Miller's influence extended beyond the Saint Louis Zoo as a senior counsel for Zoo Advisors LLC from 2019 to 2020. Today, he remains active as an advisor to the Madagascar Fauna & Flora Group. Dr. Miller's commitment to fostering international collaboration is evident in his efforts to unite European and American zoo veterinarians through shared meetings and publications.
Dr. Miller's academic journey began at The Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology, summa cum laude, in 1975. He continued his studies on campus, obtaining a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, cum laude, in 1979. These academic achievements laid the foundation for Dr. Miller's illustrious career.
A lifetime member of the European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians and past president of both the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians and the American College of Zoo Veterinarians, Dr. Miller has made significant contributions to these professional organizations. His accolades also include a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 2019 and the prestigious Murray Fowler Award in 2021.
Dr. Miller's editorial work on "Fowler's Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine" series has further cemented his legacy in veterinary literature. He has also shared his knowledge with peers worldwide as a senior editor for multiple editions and a contributor to over 60 scientific publications.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Miller is actively involved in civic organizations, including the World Bird Sanctuary and the Harris World Ecology Center at the University of Missouri in Saint Louis. His dedication to conservation is also reflected in his efforts to connect local audiences with wildlife conservation initiatives.
Throughout his career, Dr. Miller has received numerous awards for his work with pandas and tigers in China as part of a U.S. team training Chinese veterinarians.
