COLUMBUS, IN, October 15, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jairo Sandoval Leon, PhD, PE, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Currently serving as a systems engineering product advisor at Cummins Inc. in Columbus, Indiana, Dr. Sandoval Leon has established himself as a leading figure in systems engineering and product development. In his role, he lends his extensive expertise in guiding complex engineering projects to advance innovative solutions within the automotive industry. His tenure of nearly 15 years at Cummins Inc. has been marked by significant achievements, most notably receiving the Dr. Julius Perr Innovation Award in 2025 for the creation of advanced electronic features that improve the X15 engine's drive cycle efficiency — an honor that recognizes exceptional inventiveness and impact within the organization. This accolade is particularly meaningful given its namesake, Dr. Julius Perr, was a renowned Cummins inventor who held 186 patents.

Prior to reaching his current role at Cummins, Dr. Sandoval Leon was a control systems research and system integration senior technical specialist from 2018 to 2022. During this period, he spearheaded the development of a learning-based optimal freight management project in collaboration with external partners such as Michelin and Venture Transport, further solidifying his reputation as a leader in technical innovation. In this role, he also performed simulation, controls development, validation and truck testing for vehicle fuel economy, published related peer-reviewed papers, and presented at SAE COMVEC. From 2015 to 2018, he led the organization's vehicle mission simulation team, where he managed multidisciplinary teams focused on optimizing vehicle performance through advanced replication techniques, including modeling and simulation of controls performance features.

Dr. Sandoval Leon gained valuable early experience as a senior product development engineer at Navistar Inc. in Lisle, Illinois, from 2011 to 2012, during which he contributed to the design and implementation of advanced sensor diagnostics and hybrid-electric vehicle models.

Before relocating to the United States, Dr. Sandoval Leon served in the realm of academia as an assistant professor of thermal-fluid sciences at Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, from 2005 to 2006, following his two-year service as a graduate teaching assistant in mechanical engineering. He began his professional journey as a project engineer with Rosillo Engineering in Cali from 2003 to 2004, during which he was involved in the design of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for Bayer Pharmaceutical.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sandoval Leon has been recognized for his inventive contributions with several vehicle-related patents, including for the optimization of concurrent operations of cruise control and idle coast management control in 2017-2024, driveline disengagement and coasting management in 2021 and management and optimization of freight delivery vehicle fleets in 2025.

Dr. Sandoval Leon's educational background is equally extensive and international in scope. He earned a Master of Engineering in systems engineering from Cornell University in 2024, a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University in 2011, a Master of Science in engineering from Universidad del Valle in Cali in 2005 and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the same institution in 2003. As a graduate research assistant at West Virginia University, he also completed a doctoral dissertation that advanced important conversations about hybrid vehicle performance and their environmental impact.

To augment his knowledge and qualifications, Dr. Sandoval Leon is certified as an associate systems engineering professional by the International Council on Systems Engineering and holds multiple leadership certificates from the Cornell Selander Center for Engineering Leadership. Licensed as a professional engineer by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, he was also recognized as a Six Sigma green belt by Cummins and earned the Six Sigma black belt certification level I from The Council for Six Sigma Certification.

Dr. Sandoval Leon attributes his success to diligent effort, perseverance through challenges and strong ethical principles, guided by his faith in Christ — qualities that have guided him throughout his academic pursuits and professional advancements. To share insights and stay aware of the latest developments within his field, he is affiliated with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers International and the International Council on Systems Engineering.

In addition to his engineering roles, Dr. Sandoval Leon has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to education and community well-being as a mindfulness volunteer at Parkside Elementary School in Columbus from 2021 to 2025. His dedication extends into civic engagement, where he serves as a prayer, communion, music, and children's liturgy minister at Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church. Furthermore, he was a troop leader for the Southside Daisy Troop with the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana from 2017 to 2019, fostering leadership development among young girls.

Dr. Sandoval Leon's excellence as both a student and engineer has been recognized with numerous accolades. He received the Technical Business Impact Award from Cummins' chief technical officer in 2024, advanced engineering recognition for research and development in 2020 and a business impact award from the vice president and chief technical officer of Cummins in 2019. He also achieved the highest historical score in the Doctor of Philosophy qualifying exam for mechanical engineering at West Virginia University in 2007 as well as the best graduate distinction at Universidad del Valle in 2003.

Happily married and a proud father of two, Dr. Sandoval Leon is devoted to raising his daughters and pursues personal enrichment through learning to play the violin. Looking to the future, he aims to continue making an impact through all he does by contributing meaningfully to both company initiatives and community endeavors through his work in systems engineering while maintaining active involvement in volunteer activities.
