Spain, a distinguished Human Resources (HR) executive, has built a remarkable career spanning more than two decades at Lockheed Martin. Since 2023, he has served as the HR vice president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC). In this executive role, he oversees all aspects of HR strategy, labor and employee relations, compensation and global talent acquisition for a business area comprising approximately 18,000 employees. His team includes over 160 HR business partners and specialists at MFC.
In his current role, Spain's leadership is instrumental in supporting the company's high-growth initiatives, particularly as the company responds to increased global demand for advanced defense systems. He plays a pivotal role in scaling production capabilities and aligning resources to meet these critical needs.
Prior to this appointment, Spain served as the HR vice president for Lockheed Martin Space where he managed numerous classified programs within a business area that employed approximately 22,000 people at that time. His oversight of sensitive projects vital to national security further established his expertise in government contracting and program management.
Between 2018 and 2020, Spain held dual responsibilities as the HR vice president for Lockheed Martin Enterprise Operations and acting Engagement & Compliance Officer. In this position, he spearheaded corporate-wide initiatives and partnered with business areas to develop and implement training that ensured adherence with corporate policies and procedures.
From 2017 to 2018, he served as the HR vice president for Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, overseeing approximately 30,000 employees at that time.
Spain joined the company in 2000 and has held various HR roles of increasing scope and responsibility over the years. His prior experience includes serving as senior manager and HR director of several functions, programs and lines of business.
Throughout his tenure at Lockheed Martin, he has demonstrated exceptional versatility by transitioning between diverse business areas, making significant contributions in each one. His comprehensive experience spans development, production, services and sustainment across both large-scale and smaller projects. This breadth of exposure has enabled him to support the company's commitments to warfighters and shareholders alike.
Spain's academic foundation includes a master's degree in industrial and organizational psychology from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He also earned a bachelor's degree in psychology, summa cum laude, from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition to his degrees, he holds a certificate in human resources management from George Mason University, and has completed executive learning certification coursework in change management.
His entry into HR was influenced by early experiences in social work while pursuing his graduate studies. During this time, he assisted a nonprofit organization with certification preparation and led performance improvement projects at Nordstrom. A professor recognized his impact and facilitated an introduction to Lockheed Martin's HR Leadership Development Program, a pivotal moment that launched his long-standing career with the company.
Reflecting on his career, Spain attributes his accomplishments to his faith in God, steadfast family support and an unwavering commitment to hard work — qualities that continue to shape his leadership approach within one of the world's foremost aerospace companies. Reflecting his dedication to professional excellence, he has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Black Engineer of the Year Award in 2024, Nova Awards from Lockheed Martin in 2012, honors from the Black Excellence Council and recognition among the HR Top 50.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Spain is deeply committed to civic engagement, serving on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. Since 2023, he has been a board member of The Cloud Family Foundation Inc., and since 2022, he has served on the board of Laila's Gift Incorporated. He is also actively involved with Jack and Jill of America Inc. and CoolKids.
Born in Philadelphia, he enjoys listening to R&B, rap and gospel music, building models and spending quality time with his supportive wife and playing with his two children. Looking ahead, he aims to ensure that Lockheed Martin MFC remains optimally positioned to provide essential resources for warfighters' success, a goal that will require continued dedication amid evolving industry demands. Spain is currently engaged in training simulations as part of succession planning within Lockheed Martin while preparing for new board responsibilities associated with Cloud Family Foundation.
