Dr. Kaplan is recognized for his remarkable career in geology and environmental consulting, marked by decades of professional achievement and leadership. Since 1989, he has served as the president of Earthsource Consulting Inc., a one-person consulting company specializing in environmental and oil and gas geology. In this capacity, Dr. Kaplan continues to provide expert guidance on complex geological projects while enjoying the flexibility to manage his own schedule.

Over the course of his career as a consultant, Dr. Kaplan has been involved in several projects that have had significant positive impacts on communities. Notably, he authored reports for Seward County, Nebraska, which contributed to the development of a more accurate and efficient water supply system. Additionally, Dr. Kaplan's research was instrumental in assisting Boys Town in Omaha to settle with a construction company responsible for damaging an on-campus lake.

Besides managing Earthsource Consulting Inc., Dr. Kaplan was an associate professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, from 1989 to 2008. His academic contributions have influenced numerous students and advanced the field of geology through both teaching and research.

From 1980 to 1986, Dr. Kaplan worked as a geological specialist with Pennzoil Exploration in Denver, where he applied his expertise to oil and gas exploration projects across the Rocky Mountains and the Williston Basin. Before this, he worked in the government sector as a geologist with the U.S. Department of Energy in Bruceton, Pennsylvania, between 1979 and 1980, contributing to federal coal-related energy initiatives.

Dr. Kaplan's first introduction to academia was between 1976 and 1980 as a visiting instructor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. In 1980, he was also appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he shared his knowledge with graduate students and collaborated on various research endeavors. Earlier in his career, Dr. Kaplan worked as an engineer for U.S. Steel Corporation in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, in 1976.

Dr. Kaplan's academic background includes an Artium Baccalaureus in geology from Lafayette College in 1971, a Master of Science in geology from Lehigh University in 1976, and a Doctor of Philosophy in geology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981. Expanding his expertise beyond geology, Dr. Kaplan obtained a Master of Arts in international relations from Salve Regina University in 1987 and completed postgraduate coursework at the U.S. Naval War College that same year. He is also recognized as a financial planner.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kaplan has been actively involved in several professional organizations. He was a member of the American Economic Association, and is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists and the Geological Society of America. His civic engagement includes former participation as a member of Adoptive Families of Denver. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion, and a member of the Jewish War Veterans.

As a notable scholar, Dr. Kaplan has contributed over 25 articles and reviews to various professional journals. He also served as the editor for the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists during the early 1980s. Shortly thereafter, he became the editor for "Cenozoic Paleogeography of West Central U.S.," published in 1985, and the associate editor for "Rocky Mountain Guidebook: Sandstone Reservoirs of the Rocky Mountain Region," released in 1989. Dr. Kaplan earned the second-place prize in the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings 1985 competition, with his paper on the role of the U.S. Naval Reserve. Dr. Kaplan's creative background further included composing musical works, such as "Trio Medieval Fantasy" and "Short Trio."

Dr. Kaplan is currently working on several books, a lifelong aspiration now realized during this phase of his career. Among these projects is a book about J.R.R. Tolkien and a revision of his father's last book on retirement, a collaboration they had hoped to complete together.

In light of his hard work, Dr. Kaplan was a research grantee from the National Science Foundation in 1970 and a James L. Dyson Scholar at Lafayette College that same year. His civic commitments earned him the Silver Acorn Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 1986, and several awards for soccer coaching.
