RIVERVIEW, FL, October 31, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mavin Karlins, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Marked by significant contributions to academia, aviation safety, publishing and the world of professional poker, Dr. Karlins has led a diverse career path of more than 60 years. In this capacity, he continues to share his wealth of expertise in management and behavioral psychology while engaging with a broad audience through his (1) academic, (2) consulting, (3) poker and (4) writing pursuits.

Academic career:

In high school, Marvin served as President of his Class and also founded the charitable foundation ATAC (American Teens Against Cancer). He received his baccalaureate degree in psychology (Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Minnesota. While there, he conducted free classes in folk guitar where he was privileged to introduce folk singing to one of his students, Bob Dylan. Marvin completed his educational training at Princeton University as an NIH Fellow, receiving his PhD in Psychology and also serving on the faculty. It took him only nine years from the start of his graduate education (1963) to achieve the highest academic rank of Full Professor. He currently completed his 61st year as a faculty member, 51 years with his current employer, the University of South Florida (a top ranked AAU university) working as a Management Professor in the MUMA School of Business. During these six decades, he influenced multiple generations of students, many of whom have credited his teaching with positively changing their lives. Particularly proud of the enduring impact he has had on his students, he is delighted that some former pupils have returned to his classroom with their own children. His devotion to personalized education is further reflected in the numerous teaching awards he has received, letters from former students expressing their gratitude for his guidance and mentorship and the USF Presidential Medal for his work in raising money for student scholarships.

Consulting work:

Dr. Karlins has consulted with numerous small and large businesses world-wide. His most extensive work was as senior consultant for Singapore Airlines from 1982 to 2002. During this time, he presented seminars to all management level staff in Singapore and their overseas stations. The majority of his efforts, however, were directed at the airline's "operational area:" pilots, cabin crew, station managers and ground engineers. In this role he developed the world's first "OASIS" initiative — Operational Areas Seminar in Synergy — which brought together pilots, flight engineers, in-flight (cabin crew) supervisors and station managers to foster teamwork and improve communication across operational areas. This program addressed the challenges faced by each of these operational employees and promoted a deeper understanding of how the four groups of employees could work together as a successful team to facilitate the airline's complex operations. He also was recognized for his pioneering work in aviation safety and education through several different Cockpit Resource Management seminars. Through this venture, he championed the importance of collaboration and effective communication among pilots to prevent accidents and save lives — a philosophy that has become foundational in modern aviation training. He also wrote a ground-breaking article on the impact of spousal stress on pilot performance in the cockpit. His efforts were vital in helping Singapore Airlines enhance its reputation as one of the world's leading carriers.

Poker achievements:

Dr. Karlins is also recognized for his achievements in the poker community as a professional player, author and ambassador. He has appeared on national television as a World Poker Tour final table participant and been televised at the feature table of the World Series of Poker's Main Event. As a writer, he has authored/co-authored four poker books, including the widely acclaimed "Reap 'em and Reap" text written with FBI expert Joe Navarro and introduced by poker legend Phil Hellmuth. He also served as an editor and columnist for Gambling Times Magazine for a decade. As a poker ambassador for the Wynn Derby Poker Casino in St. Petersburg, Florida, he continues to promote the game's core values of skill and integrity. Additionally, he supervises the Poker Club at the University of South Florida, where he mentors more than 150 students who share his enthusiasm for the game.

Author/journalist:

As a member of the Author's Guild and International Federation of Journalists, Dr. Karlins authored and/or co-authored over 30 books (translated into 50+ foreign language editions) and 150 professional, academic and popular journal articles. His books have been on several major best-seller lists, with his most successful text, What Every BODY is Saying (authored with ex-FBI agent Joe Navarro), selling over a million copies and published in 20+ foreign language editions. He has served as an editor or consulting editor on several academic and popular journals, had one novel optioned for a potential movie and written opinion pieces for local, national and international newspapers.

Dr. Karlins takes great pride in his family; his daughter Amber has achieved recognition as an award-winning screenwriter in the entertainment industry while his wife of 48 years, Edyth, dedicated more than 35 years to teaching before retiring at age 65. His granddaughter, Ella, also brings joy to his heart as she races from birth to adulthood at breathtaking speed.

Dr. Karlins' life and legacy are defined by his unwavering commitment to education, innovation in aviation safety, dedication to the poker community and literary achievement, and meaningfully connecting with others through everything he does.
