Serving as a professor of nursing at South University, she imparts her extensive knowledge to student nurses, guiding them into the nursing profession through both academic and clinical settings. Her role as faculty and prior student success specialist role at Coastal Bend College further underscores her commitment to nurturing future generations of nurses.

Dr. Benson was inspired to enter her field after recognizing a critical gap between the theoretical education that nursing students receive in universities and the practical skills required in clinical settings. She observed that accelerated programs often thrust nurses into the workforce without adequate preparation, which motivated her to bridge that gap. By bringing students into clinical environments, she seeks to help them connect classroom learning with real-world applications.

Prior to her current positions, Dr. Benson held the role of clinical education manager at the Galen College of Nursing in San Antonio from 2023 to 2024, where she also served as an adjunct professor in 2023, then promoted to clinical education manager. Her tenure as an endoscopy registered nurse at Mercy Hospital from 2017 to 2020 was marked by her dedication to patient care and education. Earlier in her career, she worked as a clinical nurse and educator in endoscopy with the multiple travel organizations from 2007 to 2016.

Dr. Benson's career is further distinguished by her leadership roles, including serving as an ambulatory clinic nurse manager under a contract with the Medical Employment Directory in 2010, and as an endoscopy staff charge nurse with nursing agencies from 2007 to 2016. Her experience as a clinical research associate at PRA International, cruise conference speaker for Seminars at Sea, and as a corporate compliance manager and educator at Health Midwest particularly highlights her versatility and expertise in community health and speaking engagements. As the owner and chief executive officer of ExcelNurse, PA from 1994 to 1999, she established herself as a recognized leader in home health.

Dr. Benson's academic achievements have been instrumental in shaping her career. She earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice in systems leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2024, during which time, she developed a test process using quantitative data to evaluate new nurses on the floor. This project eventually led to programs designed to increase mindfulness and resilience for novice nurses entering the nursing profession.

This doctorate followed Dr. Benson's Master of Science in nursing education from the same institution in 2022. Her educational foundation was laid with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2012 and an associate degree in nursing from Nash Edgecombe Wilson Halifax Consortium-Rocky Mount in 1980. Certified by the Texas State Board of Nursing as a registered nurse, she attributes her success to her passion for nursing and her drive to give back to the profession.

Dr. Benson is driven by a deep passion for patient care and a commitment to mentoring new nurses as they develop in their profession. She actively seeks opportunities to share her expertise through teaching, presentations, and consulting on customer service and patient care practices. She also emphasizes that her dedication to both education and patient care is heartfelt, and she believes that her ability to deliver compassionate nursing care is an inherent strength.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Benson is actively involved with industry-related organizations, such as Sigma Theta Tau, Sigma Phi Kappa, and the American Nurses Association. Her civic contributions include serving on the board of directors for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Abused and Neglected Children) and volunteering with the San Antonio, Texas' Food Bank and Haven for Hope since 2022, as well as Georgetown, Texas' Caring Places and Helping Hands since 2024.

Dr. Benson has authored several significant presentations and projects that reflect her commitment to improving nursing practice. These include the "Nurse Readiness Camp for New Nursing Students," since 2022, "Nurse Graduate Clinical Readiness," initiated in 2023, and her doctoral project "Improving Nurse Resilience in Novice Nurses with Mindfulness and Time Management Initiatives," since 2023.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Benson enjoys playing pickleball, golf, geocaching, fur baby walks, solving jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with her family including her two sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren. Looking ahead, she aims to develop strategies that focus on developing more leaders within the field and more speaking engagements, while achieving a balanced work-life dynamic.
