LYME, NH, November 10, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alan C. Hartford, MD, PhD, FACR, FASTRO, professor of radiation oncology at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and associate director of the Quality Assurance Review Center (QARC) within the Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core of the National Cancer Institute's National Clinical Trials Network, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the April/May 2024 Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine regional issue of Fortune magazine.

Dr. Hartford — a distinguished name in medicine with specializations in neuro-oncology, pediatric oncology, connective tissue oncology and genitourinary oncology — was recently named professor of radiation oncology at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and associate director of the Quality Assurance Review Center within the Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core of the National Cancer Institute's National Clinical Trials Network. Previously, Dr. Hartford founded the radiation oncology residency program at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, where he served as the program's first director and professor of medicine. He initially joined Dartmouth's medical faculty in 2004 and subsequently served as its interim chief of radiation oncology for more than 10 years while also chairing Dartmouth Cancer Center's clinical research quality improvement committee and serving as continuing medical education course director for its Grand Rounds.

Dr. Hartford became involved in his profession out of a deep-rooted passion for nurturing the development, growth and healing of others. Viewing science as a romantic quest for knowledge and its application in medicine as a true art, he has been honored to serve on more than 20 scientific review panels for the National Cancer Institute and co-author more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications, even while teaching literature to Dartmouth medical students. In 2015, he published his first novel, a medical suspense thriller, "The First Days of August," under the pen name Alan Froning. Additionally, Dr. Hartford remains active as an associate editor for Practical Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Hartford studied at Stanford University, earning a Bachelor of Science with distinction and a Master of Arts in philosophy. He then attended Harvard University, from which he attained a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in political economy and government. Following these accomplishments, he undertook an internship at Deaconess Hospital in Boston and was accepted as a resident, fellow and faculty member in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Staying abreast of developments affecting his field, Dr. Hartford has held many leadership roles in professional organizations. In addition to completing service in 2025 as president of the Council of Affiliated Regional Radiation Oncology Societies, he now sits on the Council Steering Committee of the American College of Radiology. He also serves on New Hampshire's delegation to the American Medical Association and previously held numerous high-level positions in the American College of Surgeons and the Radiological Society of North America.

Well-regarded for his contributions to practical medicine and the edification of future practitioners, Dr. Hartford has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and a Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology. He has also ranked frequently among New Hampshire Magazine's Top Doctors and, for many years, has been listed by Castle Connolly as one of America's Top Doctors. Furthermore, the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) recognized him as its Top Doctor of the Year in 2020. For his accomplishments at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine, Dr. Hartford received several professional accolades, including an Excellence in Teaching Award and Continuing Medical Education Faculty Director Award, among many other plaudits to his credit.

In accounting for his success, Dr. Hartford credits the comfort and strength provided by his Christian faith, as well as the love and support of his family, and his friends and colleagues. Looking ahead, he hopes to contribute to present and future generations through all his personal and professional relationships — at home, at work and across society.
