Mr. Smith's responsibilities include developing insurance brokerage services that protect those millions of users, leveraging his expertise in building and product development, while maintaining autonomy to implement large-scale changes. In addition to his executive role at Trucker Path Insurance, Mr. Smith has also been an adviser to Claimbrite since 2024, contributing his industry knowledge to support innovation in claims management technology.
Before these positions, Mr. Smith was engaged in academia as a guest lecturer in mathematics, computer science and at Loyola University Chicago from 2023 to 2024 and as a guest lecturer in product design at the University of Chicago between 2022 and 2023. He previously served as an adjunct professor of mathematics at Loyola University Chicago between 2022 and 2023, where he became the youngest adjunct professor in the institution's history. His teaching experience also includes serving as a teaching assistant for the entrepreneurship department at the University of Chicago in 2022.
From 2021 to 2024, Mr. Smith primary position was on the founding team of LuckyTruck as the vice president of product and technology, an insurance startup he joined after meeting Devin Bostick. He managed data, engineering, design and product teams while guiding the company through significant growth, from inception to approximately 100 employees and millions of dollars in revenue. The company raised around $10 million in venture funding from prominent insurance firms, including Sirius Point, Markd, and Candid Insurance Partners, as well as investment from the chief executive officer and chief revenue officer of Angi.
Notably, Mr. Smith and Mr. Bostick pitched their business to Mark Cuban early on and secured additional support from influential industry leaders. In July 2024, LuckyTruck was acquired by Lancer Financial Group. During his tenure at LuckyTruck, Mr. Smith navigated complex challenges, including an economic recession that necessitated difficult decisions, such as workforce reductions, which shaped his approach to leadership and resilience.
Before co-founding LuckyTruck, Mr. Smith held a range of roles that shaped his expertise in product development and technology. From 2020 to 2021, he was an adviser to Strada Art Inc. Between 2018 and 2020, he worked at Embroker, contributing to the launch of six digital insurance products. Earlier, he gained experience in sales and operations through roles at Bungalow, Via On-Demand Transit, and NRG Global Inc.
Mr. Smith's academic background includes a Master of Science in mathematics from Loyola University Chicago, earned at just 21 years old, and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and computer science from Loyola University Chicago, completed the year prior. He also attended Harvard University for its secondary school program, where he took coursework in finance and financial management services before graduating with a diploma from Sault Area High School.
Growing up in rural Northern Michigan before relocating to Chicago after high school graduation shaped Mr. Smith's perspective on opportunity and ambition. His initial exposure to the insurance industry came through an internship at NRG Global Inc., where he met the chief operating officer of Embroker. This connection led him into digital insurance product development during his formative years.
Throughout his career, Mr. Smith has credited his success to boldness, perseverance and mentorship. In addition to his professional work, Mr. Smith is actively involved in civic and educational initiatives. He has contributed as a donor to Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center, volunteered with organizations such as 7 Elements and Global Leadership Adventures and supported COVID-19 policy research with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His academic and mentorship roles include serving as a mathematics tutor at Loyola University Chicago since 2019 and participating in the university's Mathematics & Statistics Club. Known for his creative output, Mr. Smith's work spans research, writing and app development. In his personal life, Mr. Smith enjoys DJing, creating electronic music, playing the guitar and biking.
