Before founding Austin's Fine Jewelry, Mr. Austin embarked on a diverse career path that began at Sears Roebuck in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Starting at the age of 19, he quickly advanced through the ranks in the retail sector, becoming a store manager by his 21st birthday in 1967. Over 13 years, Mr. Austin managed multiple Sears locations across Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, honing his skills in retail management and customer service.

In 1978, Mr. Austin ventured into entrepreneurship by purchasing a gift shop. Despite initial enthusiasm, economic challenges led to its closure after a year and a half. Undeterred, he continued to pursue his passion for business ownership by managing Glenn Cutter's Jewelry Store in Las Cruces from 1980 to 1988. This experience further solidified Mr. Austin's interest in the jewelry industry and paved the way for his future endeavors.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Austin has been actively involved in civic organizations. He served on the board of Mesilla Valley Hospice for seven years, demonstrating his commitment to community service and support for those in need.

In light of his success, Mr. Austin was recognized with accolades, including the Bulletin's Best of the Mesilla Valley award in 2025. He credits much of his success to his family life with his wife Kathleen Jo Austin, whom he met during high school. Their enduring partnership has been a cornerstone of Mr. Austin's ongoing tenure in the jewelry business, providing unwavering support throughout their journey.
