In this capacity, he supervises the busiest district in Miami County as the executive officer and second-in-command. Reporting directly to a police major who oversees the district, Mr. Shanks is responsible for all operations, including patrol and general investigations. His leadership is marked by a steadfast commitment to public service, emphasizing teamwork and his colleagues' well-being. Before his current position, Mr. Shanks held the title of lieutenant with the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office in 2025. During this period, he continued to demonstrate his expertise in management and criminal justice, further solidifying his reputation as an effective leader within the department.

From 2001 to 2025, Mr. Shanks served as a police officer in all ranks with the Miami-Dade Police Department. Over more than two decades in this role, he developed a comprehensive understanding of law enforcement operations and cultivated a culture of collaboration among his peers. His dedication to public safety and community engagement was evident throughout his tenure.

In addition to his distinguished law enforcement career, Mr. Shanks has an extensive military service record. Since 2025, he has served as a section leader with the 350th Civil Affairs Command, and since 2024, he has also served with the United States Army Reserve in the same command. His military journey began in 1997 with the United States Army, where he has held positions such as team sergeant, platoon leader, company commander, and small-group leader. Notably, Mr. Shanks deployed to Ukraine in late 2021 and returned home in late 2022 before transitioning to operations in Western Europe. During this period, he attended military school and completed several rigorous courses over three years, culminating in his promotion to lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Shanks' academic achievements have played a pivotal role in his professional development. He earned a Master of Business Administration in criminal justice and police science from Alliant International University in San Diego, California. He also holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration and management from Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida. Furthering his expertise, Mr. Shanks completed intermediate-level education in military strategic studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the advanced operations and warfighting course at the same institution in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He credits much of his success to his family's unwavering support, acknowledging that personal achievements are often made possible by a strong network of encouragement and guidance.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mr. Shanks is actively involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, reflecting his commitment to mentorship and community service. His exemplary service has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Bronze Medal with Valor in 2007, a Bronze Star from the United States Army for commendable service in 2010, and deployment medals for his contributions during operations in Iraq that same year.

On a personal level, Mr. Shanks is dedicated to his family and is the father of three children: a twenty-three-year-old eldest child, an eleven-year-old middle child and a two-year-old youngest child. He enjoys playing soccer, participating in pickup games, hiking, biking and motorcycle riding during his leisure time.

Looking ahead, Mr. Shanks aspires to advance within law enforcement by becoming a police major and leading his own precinct or district. In parallel with his military career goals, he seeks promotion to colonel, with aspirations to command a brigade before ultimately retiring from service.
