Dr. Hsueh has established herself as a leading expert in both enterprise-level and entrepreneurial environments. Since 2022, she has served as the AI enablement and external innovation lead at Pfizer Inc., where she oversees the implementation of ethical and responsible AI and machine learning (ML) practices across the organization. In this capacity, Dr. Hsueh evaluates the landscape of innovation in AI and ML across industries, developing strategies that align with Pfizer's organizational needs and strategic vision. She also leads data science work streams within broader organizational initiatives, providing operational support and thought leadership on technical and strategic objectives. Among other responsibilities, Dr. Hsueh engages with key business and technical stakeholders in cross-functional teams and consults on data science projects using rigorous statistical methods and ML techniques. She currently manages a portfolio of more than 200 AI projects at her pharmaceutical company.
Before joining Pfizer Inc., Dr. Hsueh contributed her expertise to Bayesian Health from 2020 to 2022, focusing on health AI and data science. She played a pivotal role in advancing health informatics solutions that bridged the gap between innovative research and practical application in clinical settings. Dr. Hsueh also served as a senior manager of health informatics at Viome between 2019 and 2020 to push the envelopes of provisioning precision wellness solutions to consumers.
Earlier, Dr. Hsueh dedicated over a decade to IBM, beginning as a staff scientist from 2008 to 2019. During this period, she was recognized for her advocacy of responsible AI practices, emphasizing the alignment of technology with human values, and for raising awareness about bias and transparency in AI systems. Between 2017 and 2019, she was also a member of the Academy of Technology at IBM, where she provided thought leadership on emerging technologies and their impact on health care. While at IBM, Dr. Hsueh served as the co-chair of the Health Informatics Professional Interest Community from 2016 to 2019.
Dr. Hsueh's academic appointment as an advisor at the NIS Lab at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2016 was significant, as she contributed her expertise in informatics research. As part of the fellowship of her PhD study from 2004 to 2008, she held associate positions at both Augmented Multiparty Interactions project (EU Horizon cross-organization project) and the University of Edinburgh, where she conducted foundational research that informed her later work in AI innovation.
Dr. Hsueh's undergraduate education culminated in a bachelor's degree in computer science from National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1999. She later earned a Master of Information Management and Systems at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2002, and a Doctor of Philosophy in informatics from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 2009.
Active professionally, Dr. Hsueh served as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard committee voting member, a board member for the Association for Computing Machinery's practitioners board, the chair-elect for the consumer and pervasive health informatics working group at the American Medical Informatics Association, and the co-chair for the AI Evaluation Showcase.
Dr. Hsueh's professional influence extends beyond corporate roles into civic engagement and leadership within prominent organizations. She serves as the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)'s Women in AMIA steering committee co-chair and is a fellow of the AMIA. Dr. Hsueh has also contributed to academic publishing as a guest editor for JAMIA OPEN from 2018 to 2020 and as the co-editor of the textbook, "Personal Health Informatics: Patient Participation in Precision Health (as part of the series Cognitive Informatics in Biomedicine and Healthcare)," published by Springer in 2022. Furthermore, she has been awarded a dozen U.S. patents for her innovations in AI applications within health care and related fields.
In light of her achievements, Dr. Hsueh has been recognized with numerous awards, including the IFIP IP3 David O'Leary Award, the AMIA Distinguished Paper Award, and IBM's Fifth Innovation Plateau Award, among others. Looking ahead, he is dedicated to expanding the global impact of AI for good, particularly its role in workforce transformation. Dr. Hsueh is also advocating for the formation of organizational alliances to address challenges related to preparing humanity for an evolving workforce shaped by AI technologies, as well as leading the creation of sector-based AI standards.
