Dr. Abdelmawgoud, an accomplished expert in advanced missile guidance algorithms and hypersonic technology, has established a distinguished career spanning several years in engineering and defense innovation. In his current role as a senior manager of systems engineering at Raytheon since 2025, he manages hypersonic performance for a major product while collaborating across multiple programs to support broader technical needs. He leads teams of engineers and oversees critical technical efforts essential to the organization's mission. He is responsible for reviewing and developing innovative ideas for funding, teaching on-site classes such as Introduction to Missile Guidance and robotics, and mentoring emerging engineers within the company.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Abdelmawgoud served as a principal systems engineer at Raytheon Missiles & Defense from 2022 to 2025, during which time he contributed significantly to the advancement of guidance systems and played a pivotal role in product development initiatives. From 2019 until 2022, he was a senior systems engineer at the same organization, further honing his expertise in missile guidance technologies and leading several high-impact projects.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Abdelmawgoud led and contributed to a notable tenure as a research engineer at Southwest Research Institute between 2014 and 2019. While there, he was a key team member involved in designing the world's largest Commercial robot — a milestone that stands among his most impactful achievements.

Previously, Dr. Abdelmawgoud gained essential experience serving as a graduate researcher at the University of Texas at San Antonio Unmanned Systems Lab from 2010 to 2016, contributing to pioneering research in unmanned systems. He began his professional journey as a manufacture engineer with EControls from 2012 until 2014.

In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Abdelmawgoud has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arizona since 2020, where he has developed and taught courses in aircraft performance, aircraft stability and controls, and advanced aircraft dynamics and control systems design. Through these courses, he has imparted his expertise to future engineers and supported their academic and professional growth. He also serves as a Design/Build/Fly report judge for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

Providing Dr. Abdelmawgoud with a robust foundation for applying complex mathematical and physical concepts to real-world engineering challenges — an approach that continues to drive his success — was his academic background, which began with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio, awarded in 2012. He subsequently earned a Master of Science in electrical and electronics engineering in 2015 and a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical and electronics engineering in 2019 from the same institution.

Beyond his formal education, Dr. Abdelmawgoud has obtained significant professional credentials, including earned value management system certification from Raytheon Missiles & Defense in 2020 and lean six sigma certifications. He also maintains active memberships with leading industry organizations such as AIAA and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, underscoring his dedication to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.

In recognition of his leadership and impact on engineering innovation, Dr. Abdelmawgoud was selected for the Arizona Daily Star's 40 Under 40 list in 2021.

Throughout his career at Raytheon, he has earned numerous awards reflecting his contributions to innovation, collaboration, and advanced technologies. He received the Innovator of the Year Award in 2023, along with multiple recognitions for his contributions to Raytheon innovation and advanced technology in 2023, 2024, and 2025, honoring his efforts to strengthen and promote an innovation-focused community within the company.

His collaborative impact spans several programs and initiatives. He received a Spot Award for Collaboration for supporting a successful Raytheon Day event at the University of Arizona's Applied Mathematics Department, where he gave a technical presentation, and an Achievement Award that same year for his contributions to advancing hypersonics technologies. In 2023, he earned two Achievement Awards for Collaboration for his role in supporting the award and kickoff of one of Raytheon's major hypersonics programs. Additionally, during the COVID-19 period, he received a Spot Award for Collaboration for his flexible and adaptable support to Raytheon engineering teams.

Dr. Abdelmawgoud has also been repeatedly recognized for his innovative contributions. He received a Spot Award for Innovation for supporting the Tucson Technology Roadshow in 2024, and another Spot Award for Innovation for developing and tuning a novel guidance technique.

In 2022, he earned an Achievement Award for Innovation for helping develop a hands-on robotics course at Raytheon. He was also awarded a CORE Certificate of Achievement for his participation as a CORE Apprentice that same year.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Abdelmawgoud attributes his achievements to seeking challenging opportunities, maintaining a dedication to lifelong learning and giving back to the community. His passion for connecting academic principles with practical applications has been central throughout his professional endeavors.

Outside his career pursuits, Dr. Abdelmawgoud is committed to community service, volunteering with the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona since 2020 and Habitat for Humanity in 2023.
