From 1997 to 1999, he worked as a perfusionist with Cardiopulmonary Perfusion Associates Inc., gaining valuable experience in diverse clinical settings.

He also served as chief perfusionist at Wheeling Hospital from 1994 to 1997, overseeing perfusion operations and playing a key role in staff training and development. Dr. Shackelford began his career as a perfusionist at Charleston Area Medical Center from 1991 to 1994, laying the foundation for his subsequent achievements in cardiovascular care.

Throughout his career, Dr. Shackelford has demonstrated exceptional expertise in cardiovascular perfusion, earning recognition for his contributions to patient outcomes and professional education. He is an active member of several industry organizations, including the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology since 1991, the American Academy of Cardiovascular Perfusion and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Shackelford's academic background has been integral to his success. He earned a Doctor of Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2009, following a Master of Health Administration in finance and quality from the same institution in 2006. He completed a Bachelor of Science in extracorporeal technology at The Ohio State University in Columbus in 1991. These academic achievements provided him with a strong foundation in both clinical practice and health care management.

He holds several certifications that underscore his expertise: Just Culture certification from the Medical University of South Carolina since 2019, Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification from the Medical University of South Carolina, certification as a certified clinical perfusionist by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, and certification as a certified clinical technologist by the International Board of Clinical Technologies.

Dr. Shackelford's scholarly work includes his dissertation titled "Utilization Differences in the Treatment of Patients with Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease by Race and Payer," which addresses critical issues related to health care disparities. His research has contributed valuable insights into improving equity and access within cardiovascular care.

His accomplishments have been recognized with honors such as the Outstanding Doctoral Project Award, reflecting both academic excellence and practical impact.
