Mr. Schmitt's professional journey reflects a diverse and adaptive career marked by entrepreneurial spirit, intellectual exploration and resilience. In 2011, he founded Rappel Maui, an adventure tourism company specializing in guided waterfall rappelling experiences. He led the organization for two years, overseeing its operations and growth before selling the business in 2013. This venture followed his long tenure as founder of Hike Maui, which he established in 1983. Over the course of 29 years, Mr. Schmitt developed Hike Maui into a leading ecotourism provider on the island, demonstrating a deep commitment to sustainability and environmental education while advancing the company's positive reputation.

In 1983, Mr. Schmitt also thrived as a crew member aboard a yacht owned by the Hyatt Regency in Maui. This role marked his return to structured employment after a period of personal reflection and reintegration into society. The experience provided him with valuable interpersonal skills and a renewed sense of community engagement. He also practiced working in conscious interaction with elements of the atmosphere, in designing and implementing controls for localized weather conditions.

From 1969 to 1976, Mr. Schmitt pursued work as a quantum philosopher, dedicating himself to the contemplation of quantum physics and its philosophical implications. This period was foundational in shaping his later pursuits as an author and thought leader in the fields of science and spirituality.

In 1970, while working as a real estate appraiser, he was involved in a head-on automobile crash at an impact speed of about 100 m.p.h. by another driver on a country road and died for about a half hour. While he was out of his body, he experienced the kind of expanded awareness that has guided his understanding of life ever since. 10 years later, he had a similar experience when he fell while free-climbing a rock wall. This time, he went through an entire life review from an objective perspective. These two experiences were the most indelible of his life.

From 1976 to 1980, he operated an ice cream truck, a 46-foot charter boat and was involved in numerous real estate development projects on Maui. At the end of 1979 mortgage rates rose to 18%, completely killing the real estate market. The entire country was in a deep recession, tourism essentially terminated on Maui, residents were leaving the island, and a 54-unit condominium development that he was involved with threw him into poverty. He had pre-sold all the units, but just prior to delivery at the end of 1979, all the buyers backed out. The condos could not be rented because there was no demand. Mr. Schmitt was suddenly over-leveraged and couldn't make the mortgage payments. He had to give everything away. Then his ice cream truck was vandalized and became inoperable. Finally, a week-long hurricane that destroyed nearly all the boats on Maui also destroyed his boat. Until economic conditions changed for the better, he was left with $5,000 in the bank, no home, no employment prospects and no business income. He had to live outside in the wilderness, foraging for food and learning as much as possible about the natural environment for survival. This is what led to his eventual employment on the boat at the hotel and soon thereafter, the founding of Hike Maui.

Before advancing his philosophical pursuits, Mr. Schmitt excelled as a real estate appraisal trainee and a regular staff appraiser for Alameda County, California, for six years. His responsibilities included property valuation and market analysis, providing him with practical experience in real estate that would later inform his own investments and business ventures. Mr. Schmitt also completed coursework based on material from The Appraisal Institute, reflecting his ongoing commitment to professional development within the real estate sector.

As an author and blogger since 2020, Mr. Schmitt has focused on topics related to quantum physics and spirituality. He is particularly proud of publishing five volumes of essays that synthesize his insights from decades of study and personal experience. Encouraged by friends to share his work more broadly, he compiled these essays into published volumes that have contributed to contemporary discussions on science and consciousness. Additionally, Mr. Schmitt is developing scripts for a series of films intended for major streaming studios, further expanding his creative impact.

A passion for academic excellence prompted Mr. Schmitt to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Valparaiso University, earned in 1965, after which he studied at the Pacific School of Religion, where he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity that was later recognized as a Master of Theology. His educational pursuits and subsequent career are defined by a signature adaptability, intellectual curiosity and a dedication to sharing knowledge through writing and entrepreneurship, and Mr. Schmitt is proud that his contributions span ecotourism leadership and philosophical inquiry that inspire others interested in the intersection of science and spirituality.
