He has concurrently continued his clinical practice as a neurological surgeon at Integris Health since 2023, where his expertise in complex reconstructive spine surgery has been instrumental in elevating patient care standards.
Dr. Spence's professional journey includes an appointment as clinical assistant professor at OU Health from 2022 to 2023, where he contributed to the education and mentorship of future neurosurgeons. Prior to this academic role, he was the surgery committee chairman at Summit Medical Center in Edmond from 2014 to 2022, overseeing surgical protocols and quality initiatives.
From 2008 to 2022, Dr. Spence operated a private practice as a neurosurgeon at Caple A. Spence MD PC in Midwest City, providing specialized care and building a reputation for clinical excellence. He also served as co-medical director of neurosurgery at Oklahoma Heart Hospital from 2010 to 2016, collaborating on multidisciplinary approaches to patient management.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Spence served on the advisory editorial board of the North American Spine Society Journal from 2006 to 2014, contributing to scholarly discourse in spinal surgery. He held the position of co-medical director of neurosurgery at Iowa Spine and Brain Institute in Waterloo from 2005 to 2008, where he helped shape clinical programs and fostered innovation.
His leadership extends beyond clinical roles; Dr. Spence served as president of the Oklahoma Neurosurgical Society from 2023 to 2024, reflecting peer recognition of his contributions to the field.
Dr. Spence's academic background is foundational to his achievements. His postgraduate training includes a fellowship in complex reconstructive spinal surgery from the University of South Florida, completed in 2003, and a residency in neurological surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, completed in 2002. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 1995, after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychobiology from New York University in 1991.
Dr. Spence holds several certifications that underscore his commitment to professional development and innovation: he completed coursework on artificial intelligence in health care through MIT Professional Education in 2024; achieved certified commercial investment member status through The CCIM Institute in 2019; and has been board-certified in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery since 2008.
He attributes much of his success to his formative years growing up and attending school in Smithtown, New York, where exposure to robust health care systems and accomplished physicians instilled in him high standards for patient care. Dr. Spence maintains strong professional relationships with colleagues from his residency training, including regular discussions with his chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, which help him identify local areas for improvement and fuel his advocacy for optimal patient outcomes.
In addition to his clinical and academic pursuits, Dr. Spence has demonstrated civic engagement by serving on the board of directors of Summit Medical Center from 2010 to 2022 and of the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City from 2010 to 2013.
