Dr. Ukwu is an infectious diseases physician and esteemed expert in global regulatory affairs. She is well known for her ability to globalize and transform organizations. She currently serves as the executive vice president and chief regulatory officer at Novavax Inc. In this role since 2022, she ensures the company provides robust strategies for product development and registration and forges reciprocal relationships with regulatory agencies worldwide, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, European Medicines Agency, United Kingdom Medicines and HealthCare products Regulatory Agency, Health Canada, Australia Therapeutic Goods Administration and others. Before accepting her current role, Dr. Ukwu thrived as the senior vice president and chief regulatory and quality officer at Novavax Inc. from 2021 to 2022.

Prior to her affiliation with Novavax, Dr. Ukwu gained critical experience in roles with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Companies U.S., where she served as the senior vice president and global head of global quality and global regulatory affairs from 2016 to 2020. In her leadership capacity, she was instrumental in preparing the organization for inspections and ensuring compliance. Her affiliation with Otsuka began in 2013 when she was named the senior vice president and head of global regulatory affairs, and Dr. Ukwu relied on expertise earned through her position as the senior vice president and head of global regulatory affairs at PPD from 2010 to 2012.

Dr. Ukwu's profile is further defined by her notable tenure at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals as the vice president of global regulatory affairs from 2004 to 2010. She initiated her career in the pharmaceutical industry with Merck in 1992 and led the registration and FDA approval of significant products such as the chickenpox vaccine VARIVAX in 1995 and the HIV/AIDS protease inhibitor Crixivan in 1996, following which she became vice president in 1998 and global regulatory head for vaccine regulatory development. Dr. Ukwu remains proud of her contributions to transforming HIV/AIDS from an invariably fatal disease into a chronically manageable disease.

Dr. Ukwu's passion for continuous learning prompted her to pursue academic excellence. She earned a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Jos Medical School in Nigeria in 1982, then accepted an internal medicine internship at Meharry Hubbard Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Subsequently, Dr. Ukwu progressed to an internal medicine residency at Baptist Hospital at the University of Tennessee from 1987 to 1989 before completing an infectious diseases fellowship at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1991.

Dr. Ukwu has over thirty original new drug and new biologics products license approvals under her professional belt across the companies she has worked in. She counts her central role in securing emergency use authorization for Novavax COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S. and approvals worldwide as well as her pivotal role in achieving FDA approval for Merck HIV protease inhibitor – Crixivan her most significant professional achievements thus playing a pivotal role in two global pandemics so far in our time. This allowed the global population access to crucial products during the pandemic and established the products as vital tools in the global public health response to COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS.

Throughout her career, Dr Ukwu has been recognized with numerous awards including two-time recipient of the prestigious PharmaVoice 100 awards, first for Inspirational Leader in 2011, followed by Legacy Leader in 2023. In addition Dr. Ukwu received TOPRA award for Inspirational leadership in 2012 and was named One of the Top Blacks in Health Care in 2019. She also accepted multiple accolades from Merck, Pfizer and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Companies for her inspirational leadership, driving and guiding her teams with excellence in regulatory engagement and success. Notably, Dr. Ukwu is also a prolific author with books such as "ABCs of Leadership: Leadership Guiding Principles," a self help leadership development book published in 2020, and the landmark first textbook on "Global Regulatory Systems-A strategic primer for Biopharmaceutical Product Development and Registration." She has contributed significantly as a pharmaceutical executive and thought leader to discussions on global product registration and regulatory systems through many publications, podium presentations and panel speaker.

Beyond her professional life, Dr. Ukwu is a devoted mother to two sons and one daughter - all medical doctors. She enjoys traveling, gardening, entertaining, hosting guests and cooking. She prioritizes opportunities to give back to her roots and is collaborating with her family to establish a foundation in Nigeria that has focused on providing a reliable water supply to their village, high quality tarred road into the village, and solar lights to the church and the road street lights all to enhance the quality of life and living in the village. Dr. Ukwu also plans to contribute to Nigeria's public health system upon retirement from her U.S.-based role while completing her book on spiritual reflections inspired by her journey of faith.
