Over his 23+ year career, Mr. Paulos has accumulated over 100,000 hours of service to his community. This is based on an estimated 70,000 hours direct, patient-facing hours, including groups and individual sessions, and 30,000 hours providing training, supervision, and oversight in training, staff development, and management. He consistently took on demanding roles that others sometimes avoid, marking his steadfast commitment to service and leadership.
From 2002 to 2005, Mr. Paulos began his career with Integrated Counseling & Consulting Services as a lead Non-Violence & Drug Abstinence Educator at the clinic, as well as within inner-city middle and high schools in urban areas. He developed the program curricula and training for Non-Violence Education, which included reduction, prevention, and group facilitation training for students and trainees. Joshua again took on facilitating, training and educational roles in Non-Violence & Drug Abstinence at the Seventh Step Foundation, Sierra Services, and Terra Firma Educational & Diversion Services. He served the latter organization for 10 years, working with an estimated 40,000 people there.
Mr. Paulos' academic background has been instrumental in shaping his professional trajectory. He earned a Master of Social Work from California State University, East Bay, in 2015, after completing dual bachelor's degrees in human development and psychology, combined with a minor in women's studies from the same institution. These four degrees are a culmination of completing 108 college-level courses.
In 2015, Joshua founded Elegant Leadership, Inc., where he currently holds the roles of Founder, Owner, and President. Through this platform and many others, he dedicates himself to advancing innovative approaches in mental health care and leadership development. His work at this firm is deeply anchored in a belief that his professional journey is a calling — an ethos that shapes his daily practice and underpins his most notable achievements. Fortitude of purpose and delivery are key terms and principles that Mr. Paulos lives by. He asserts that an unwavering belief in a Higher Power and Creator is what called him to his life's purpose over 23 years ago. This conviction continues to strengthen and enable Joshua to serve with dynamic energy that is organized, thoughtful and combined with compassion as well as critical thinking, both clinically and multi-culturally.
Mr. Paulos' experience extends to working with individuals and staff within all levels of care including those struggling with severe and persistent mental illness within the City and County services provision. He has worked with and supervised interdisciplinary teams including: Stanislaus County's Crisis Emergency Response Team, Integrated Forensics Team, and the Co-Occurring Disorders Full-Service Partnership Project Team, as well as San Francisco City and County's Jail Behavioral Health Services Team, Bonita House, Inc, Telecare Corp, Human Outreach Agency, Seventh Step Foundation, St. Anthony Foundation in SF and Alameda County's Health and Human Services Agency. In the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Joshua collaborated with Telecare Corp, Alameda County Behavioral Health, and the County Sheriff's Office to initiate and provide the first-ever overnight Mental Health Services at Santa Rita County Jail, which is the third-largest County Jail in California and the fifth-largest in the United States.
In June 2023, Governor Newsom's Administration closed the State of California's Youth Authority Prison. Mr. Paulos became a key leader in the rollout of California's SB823 legislation, wherein he designed, submitted, and delivered Alameda County's Forensic Behavioral Health Plan and Program for treatment within the first-ever transitional age youth felony level unit in Alameda County's Juvenile Justice Center. This project, plan, and program integrated the State of California's guidelines for effective, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive rehabilitative care. Joshua expresses great pride and accomplishment in each individual and family positively impacted by his and his teams' service. He has unconditional high regard for each individual regardless of creed, religion, race or socio-economic background with a conviction that everyone is deserving of hope and healing. Mr. Paulos currently serves as the Director of Clinical Programs at a local transitional age youth organization, which provides housing and outpatient mental health services.
Beyond his professional endeavors, he has demonstrated civic engagement through service as President of the Board of Directors for Peers Envisioning and Engaging in Recovery Services from 2018 to 2021 in Oakland where he oversaw and promoted recovery-oriented services within the local peer-led, mental hHealth and wellness communities. Joshua attributes his triumph in service as a testament to and reflection of an intimate relationship with a Higher Power. He demonstrates an unshakable confidence that his work is more than a job, which he describes as "A Divine Calling and Sacred Purpose." These beliefs and qualities empower him to make meaningful and significant contributions throughout his career despite rigorous challenges and circumstances both past and present.
In his personal life, Joshua values time spent with family — including his daughter Eliana — and enjoys practicing self-defense, listening to live music, going on vacations and spending time outdoors in nature.
