LAKELAND, FL, January 21, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Andrew R. Barbera, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Barbera is the Founding Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Lakeland Regional Health, where he envisioned, built, and led the development of a comprehensive training program within one of the most demanding emergency care environments in the United States. The residency now includes 45 residents training in the second busiest emergency department in the nation, supported by more than 65 attending physicians. From its inception, the program was designed with intention, focusing not only on clinical excellence but on developing thoughtful, capable physicians prepared for long, meaningful careers.

Under Dr. Barbera's leadership, the residency has earned a strong reputation for training emergency physicians who excel in high-acuity settings while positively shaping the culture of medicine. His approach emphasizes clear decision-making under pressure, accountability, effective communication, and strong team-based care. These principles support excellent care at scale while intentionally fostering trust, connection, and human-centered practice.

In recognition of his impact as a program builder and educator, Dr. Barbera was subsequently appointed Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Lakeland Regional Health. In this role, he provides strategic direction for educational initiatives and faculty development while aligning training, performance, and culture across one of the nation's most complex emergency care systems.

Dr. Barbera's educational philosophy centers on the belief that the future of emergency medicine depends on physicians who can function effectively amid complexity, uncertainty, and sustained pressure without losing clarity, integrity, or connection to others. His work emphasizes disciplined thinking, systems awareness, emotional intelligence, and leadership under real-world constraints. By integrating clinical excellence with communication, accountability, and self-awareness, he develops physicians capable of leading teams and making sound decisions when information is incomplete and the stakes are high.

Beyond education and leadership, Dr. Barbera has contributed to the advancement of medical knowledge through the development of a dedicated research program within his emergency department. He has authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications and has presented at national and international conferences. His work spans physician development, medical education, and leadership training, with a particular focus on cultivating judgment, clarity, and accountability in high-stakes clinical decision-making.

Dr. Barbera also serves on multiple institutional committees, contributing to strategic planning, educational direction, and organizational decision-making within his health system.

Prior to joining Lakeland Regional Health, Dr. Barbera held leadership roles at two long-established and nationally recognized emergency medicine training programs. He served as Assistant Program Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York, where he helped design and deliver a rigorous clinical curriculum in a high-volume urban emergency department serving a diverse and medically complex population. He previously served as Site Director for the Jacobi Montefiore Einstein Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Jacobi Medical Center, one of the most influential emergency medicine residency programs in the country. In that role, he played a key role in upholding and advancing the rigorous educational standards and clinical training for which the program is nationally known. Earlier in his career, he also served as Chief Resident, developing a strong foundation in academic leadership, systems-based practice, and team-based clinical performance.

Dr. Barbera maintains active membership in prominent professional organizations, including the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine. His contributions to medical education have been recognized through multiple teaching commendations.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from The George Washington University and received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is board certified in emergency medicine and remains committed to clinical excellence, scholarship, and continuous professional growth.

Beyond the hospital setting, Dr. Barbera has intentionally worked to serve patients in underserved populations and is deeply committed to public education. Through education and public engagement, he translates complex medical language into clear, practical, and relatable understanding, helping patients and the public better grasp medical conditions, treatment options, underlying pathology, and clinical decision pathways.

Looking ahead, Dr. Barbera remains focused on building and strengthening training environments that produce exceptional physicians and physician leaders. He is equally committed to expanding his impact through education, consultation, and public-facing work that advances clinical excellence, leadership, and a more human-centered, sustainable future for medicine.
