Mr. Mattole has established himself in the field of human resources, with a career spanning more than 25 years and marked by expertise in leadership and development, employee culture and well-being, talent management and succession, global benefits and payroll and human capital technologies. Since 2023, Donovan has served as the Chief Human Resources Officer for Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, where he oversees all aspects of human resources globally.
Before joining Langan, Mr. Mattole served as the Vice President of Human Resources for the Americas at Brenntag, a German company recognized as the world's largest supplier of ingredients and chemicals, from 2016 to 2023. In this capacity, he managed human resources operations across 18 countries, overseeing approximately $7.5 billion in revenue and 7,000 employees at 250 locations. Mr. Mattole led the centralization of human resources across the region, including the consolidation of over two dozen payroll systems and over 50 benefit plans across the region, the creation of Centers of Excellence for Talent Acquisition and the introduction of a number of key engagement and talent processes and programs within the region.
Between 2010 and 2016, Mr. Mattole worked for Mars, Inc. Most recently as the Head of People and Organization overseeing HR for Mars Retail globally, which included the M&M's World stores worldwide, the global My M&M's business and Ethel M Chocolates. This included opening a flagship M&M's World store in Shanghai, China. Before that he was a Senior Director of People and Organization at Banfield Pet Hospitals, a Mars Veterinary Services brand, where he oversaw HR Business Partnering, Talent Acquisition and Associate Relations for their 15,000 associates in North America. Mr. Mattole's earlier experience included serving as director of human resources at Nautilus Inc. (now BowFlex Inc.) between 2005 and 2010. He began his career at Borders Books and Music, initially as a general manager and field trainer from 1995 to 2000, before transitioning to the regional human resources director role until 2005. During Mr. Mattole's tenure at Borders, he managed multiple stores, trained new managers and ultimately launched his career in human resources.
Mr. Mattole's academic background has provided a strong foundation for his professional achievements. He first received a Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, in 1994. He then completed graduate coursework in Near and Middle Eastern studies at Jerusalem University College in Israel in 1995 before earning a second Bachelor of Arts in human resources management from George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, in 1998.
Committed to ongoing professional development, Mr. Mattole has obtained numerous certifications that have enhanced his capabilities as a human resources leader. Among them, he received a senior professional in human resources (SPHR) certification from HRCI in 2005, Society for Human Resource Management senior certified professional (SHRM-SCP) from SHRM in 2015, Caliper certification from Talogy in 2018, 360 certification and leadership solution certification from Korn Ferry in 2019 and 2023, respectively, and professional certification from The Predictive Index in 2023. Mr. Mattole also completed an executive leadership program at London Business School in 2021 and received mindfulness-based stress reduction certification from Mindful Leader in 2022.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mattole has been recognized for his thought leadership within the profession. He has been a longstanding member of SHRM since 2000 and joined its executive network membership in 2022., he is a member of Evanta's NYC CHRO Governing Board and a member of CPO100. Additionally, he is the founder of the Eudaimonia Society, a writing group that creates curated private writing retreats.
Mr. Mattole's civic engagement is extensive and reflects a lifelong commitment to service dating back to the early 1990s. He is presently an active supporter of Hope re:news, a non-profit community and regenerative agriculture organization on the island of Lesvos in Greece, a board member of the Mattole Restoration Council focused on habitat restoration, a board member for the Inclusive Leadership Institute at the University of Houston, a member of the J.I. Rodale Leadership Society and active supporter of Rodale Institute, a former member of the Vision Team for The Barn of Allentown for five years and a community member with Summit.
Mr. Mattole's creative pursuits include writing, serving as a speaker at conferences, panels and on boards, and appearing on several podcasts. He is currently immersed in two writing projects, including a memoir recounting his unconventional upbringing on an off-grid, regenerative, organic farm in Humboldt County, Northern California. The other, titled "The Lost Coast," documents stories of individuals who left mainstream society for lives rooted in authenticity and connection with nature and moved off the grid in the late 1960's and early 1970's during the Vietnam War Era.
Born in San Francisco, Mr. Mattole grew up off grid on the Lost Coast of Northern California where his parents first lived in a teepee before building a small cabin and finally, a log cabin to raise him and the five siblings who followed. This experience instilled a deep respect for regenerative agriculture, a respect that continues through partnerships with organizations such as Rodale Institute, Hope re:news and Mattole Restoration Council. Donovan has three children, Heather Hope Mattole, Tristan Sky Mattole and Maddox Alexander Mattole and he resides in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley with his wife Emily Mattole.
Looking ahead, Mr. Mattole envisions continuing to help lead Langan Engineering & Environmental Services toward becoming a global leader within environmental consulting and civil engineering while positioning it as an employer of choice within the industry and a magnet for top talent.
