CHATHAM, MA, January 26, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert Goodwin Lacy has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Lacy has distinguished himself as the owner of Chatham Sign Shop in Chatham, Massachusetts, a position he has held since 1989. Over the course of thirty-seven years, he has become an expert in custom sign design and fabrication using computerized technology and carving techniques. His responsibilities encompass designing custom signs, meeting with walk-in customers, responding to email inquiries, creating mock-ups of signs for customer properties, producing carved and vinyl-cut signage, managing a team of seven employees, operating computerized plotters and carving equipment and overseeing all design work and customer service operations.
Among his most notable achievements during his tenure at Chatham Sign Shop is his pioneering adoption of computerized plotter technology. Mr. Lacy was the first individual on Cape Cod to acquire this advanced equipment, which revolutionized the local sign-making industry by eliminating the need for hand-painted lettering and introducing vinyl-cutting technology for trucks, boats and planes. This innovation not only enhanced efficiency but also expanded the creative possibilities for custom signage in the region.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Lacy served as owner of Geometric Furniture Company from 1982 to 1989. In this capacity, he designed and manufactured custom furniture pieces sold to designers, architects and furniture stores. His experience in furniture design provided a strong foundation for his later work in sign-making, as both fields require a keen eye for detail, craftsmanship and an understanding of client needs.
Mr. Lacy's academic background includes a Bachelor's Degree in Physics and Mathematics from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, graduating cum laude in 1956. The analytical skills and problem-solving abilities developed through his studies have been instrumental in his success as an entrepreneur and innovator. He attributes much of his professional achievement to having started his entrepreneurial journey at a very young age—at just five or six years old—which instilled a strong work ethic and business mindset that became second nature. His desire to remain active and engaged throughout his life has driven him to continue working approximately 40 hours per week across six days, even at 91 years old. The relationships he has built with clients and colleagues over the years have also played a significant role in sustaining his business.
Mr. Lacy's entry into the sign-making profession was somewhat serendipitous. After retiring in 1982 following seven years away from business, he found himself seeking new challenges. Upon noticing a sign shop for sale in 1989, he drew upon his extensive experience in furniture design and manufacturing to transition into this new field. He reasoned that if he could make furniture, he could make signs, a decision that has led to decades of fulfillment as he continues to design custom pieces that come to life in real-world applications.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Mr. Lacy is recognized for his adventurous spirit. At seventy-eight years old, he sailed from Cape Cod to the Caribbean with his wife aboard a boat she named "The Ancient Mariner," inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem. This journey stands as a testament to his willingness to embrace new experiences well into later life.
In addition to his business accomplishments, Mr. Lacy has achieved recognition in athletics, ranking 13th in New England tennis by the Lawn Tennis Association and earning a top-20 ranking for the decade by the same organization.
Born in Blue Ridge Summit, Maryland, Mr. Lacy is the father of two sons. He enjoys playing pool, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, skiing, backcountry skiing and walking his dog appropriately named ''Sailor.''
Mr. Lacy's career reflects a lifelong dedication to innovation, craftsmanship and family legacy within both the sign-making industry and beyond.
